8/10

This album was apparently originally released by Paddy McAloon himself without the rest of the band, but later was re-released by the band. This isn't pop like the rest of their music. It's like dreamscape jazz.

Largely instrumental with classical orchestration and recorded exerpts from radio talk shows for context. Not bad, and much more interesting than their regular bland pop fair, but also not something I'd ever call required listening.

Favourite songs: I'm 49, Orchid 7, I Trawl the Megahertz, Esprit de Corps

Least favourite songs: Ineffable

Oh yeah this opening track slaps. "The feeble imitations of starlight". Goddamn, this poetry is so rad! "I hunger for the taste but I can't see the orchard for the rain." "Before you became cotton in a blizzard". I'm 49 is a great song. Absolutely stellar album.
