Tattoo You is widely deemed as the last Stones album you should give a damn about. For good reason. Side A sees them return to their rollicking sound from earlier in their career, with a bit of influences from some contemporary bands like The Cars. But even with that idea of looking around to see what others were doing being a good way to go about things, the first half is very anemic and almost sterile, with nothing much to hang onto.
Unlike the B side which I would say is one of the better 5 song runs in their career. Most definitely in the later part of their career. Worried About You, Heaven and No Use in Crying are three nice slower numbers and ballads, and Waiting on a Friend is a great single that mixes reggae and pop, and nails that easy-going tropical atmosphere.
I have an LP copy of this album, and let me tell you, I've only ever spun the first side once or twice, when I first got it. That's how much of a disparity there is between the two sides.
