EDIT: I originally gave this album a 1, which the below review reflects
Maybe I'm in a bad mood, but I just found this to be boring. The Animal Years is standard folk with a bit of wilco-esque alt-country and rock. Not original by any metric, and I don't think the quality of the songwriting is enough to save it.
Should it be on the main list: No
Top 3 songs: Girl in the War, Wolves, In the Dark
Rated 6/10
A fine album for when my feathers get ruffled in the morning.
Rated 2/10
This kind of music just does nothing for me. It's cringey and saccharine. Instrumentally it's... fine. There's a song about god and the thin blue line. Gross.
Rated 8/10
This man is a hell of a songwriter. The imagery he portrays in Thin Blue Flame is amazing.
Favorite songs: Thin Blue Flame, In the Dark, Wolves, Girl in the War, "Lillian, Egypt", Monster Ballads, Good Man, Here at the Right Time
Least favorite songs: Idaho

Singer-songwriter stuff isn't generally my cup of tea, but I'm glad that he can at least sing. Probably also hit a lot better back when it released in 2006. Would have been fresh air for that era.
Rated 8/10
Never heard of Josh Ritter before, but this is a great example of a singer songwriter album, good choice.
Rated 8/10
Another folksy Americana album; I take it pretty much everyone who ever listened to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, or Johnny Cash has, at some point, gone into a studio with four chords and a book of story lyrics.
It's good, but not really anything unique, and it would, in my opinion, probably have to take the place of something similar sounding if it was to find a place in the next edition.
Rated 4/10
I feel sorry for that horse.
