This is the gateway to the 90s for a lot of people. It helped define the decade, evoking the illimitable joy of "Near Wild Heaven". This album is all over the place as the band is trying to figure out what direction it wants to go in after having enjoyed a stellar 80s. I guess these tunes are more radio friendly, which is kind of what they’re talking about in the opening track. I even enjoy the instrumental track, “Endgame”, wherein Stipe goes fa la la la la la la la la la. I love the name of this album, too, since it was the name they chose because they hadn’t chosen a title yet, were out of time, and the album was being sent to print.

I acknowledge I am the dolt R.E.M. was satirizing, but I liked Shiny Happy People more than the rest of the album.

There was plenty of R.E.M. on the original list, but I'll admit it was weird that this wasn't one of said albums. Still, R.E.M. is not an impactful enough band on my psyche for me to be dying to fill in the gaps I missed. Losing My Religion is really all you need here, IMO.

r.e.m. more like r.e.m. sleep hehe
ihan ok levy, mut ei henkilökohtaisesti nappaa. 2/5

I'm a casual R.E.M. enjoyer but my friend turned me onto this album and it's pretty great. Very catchy and the vocals are super powerful.

An all-time classic, and still not their best work! What a great band they are, somehow hugely famous and well-loved, and yet massively underrated and overlooked at the same time. For this to be on the list would perhaps mean losing one of their albums which is there already, unless the book has more albums, but it was a great listen and a worthy suggestion.

R.E.M. is both good, and already pretty well represented on the main list

I’m 50/50 if this is needed on the orginal list given all the other REM albums on their it’s a hard choice on which one to switch out for this one, but on its own merit it’s still a good album, so if it’s your personal favourite REM then fair play.

Losing My Religion is still a monster hit. Shiny Happy People is also a great tune. The non singles are not super impressive.

Any of their first 8 albums could have been included on the list. I feel like the one you hear first tends to have the most personal impact, so it's different for everyone.
