Rated 8/10
I feel like I’m sitting through a wonderful series of art house film trailers, because this music is so much larger than life, dramatic, and, of course, cinematic, even if not meaning to be. There’s no doubt about Nilović’s talent and vision, and on this album, he gets to command a 45-piece orchestra in the realization of his wonderful compositions.
Rated 7/10
Put this album on and everything you do will gain a new aspect of a gritty battle or a sneaky venture. For example, whilst listening to this album I had an intense monologue directed at a mosquito who was terrorizing me.
On a more serious note, Rythmes Contemporains is a very bulky and glamorous album, despite only clocking at 37 minutes. The orchestra of 45 instruments is most responsible with that, creating a sound that matches Nilovic's vision of a quasi gangster/mafia movie.
Another fun aspect is how the album (or better yet, Janko) lets the instruments breathe and gives way for these guys to show their chops. That's why you have a few cool drum passages, and some very nice guitar work.
