I can now see where Cohen got his arrangements from for his first two albums. The first few songs have that luscious overlaying of guitars, similarly present on Songs of Love and Hate.

Haitian Dances is a good album for the paradoxical morning. The cold weather with the sun shining type of weather. His guitar playing is undoubtedly good, but I feel like it's missing something for it to take the next step.

Someone called this "Caribbean primitivism", and that just about nails it. I'd add that the marvelously evoked tones, simultaneously bright and subdued, bring a very different flavor to the fingerstyle. This recording could never not soothe me even in my highest fit of pique. So yeah, just insult me and then play this album.
