Egotrip

I find it hard to write a review for this one. It's one of those rare hip hop albums from the 2010s onward that doesn't sound like a chore to listen to, so from the start, it's a different turn in my usual hip hop listening journey.

Right from the get-go, the thing that surprises me is how the beats sound varied, with a lot of little samples sprinkled around that give them a memorable feel, instead of the usual trap ticking or the boom-bap sound.

Their delivery is powerful, with a sort of "beating your chest proudly" energy, and with a lot of boastful and triumphant lyrics to boot. It's nothing new under the sun, but it's definitely better than the countless attempts so far in the near past.

There's only one minus, and that's how maximalist it all sounds. It doesn't breath, but paces and smacks you around at every step. It's not a bad thing, but it narrows the moments in my daily life when I can sit and enjoy this one.

But I still love it with each listen. A big surprise in this day and age for me to find such a simple hip hop album with such a big punch to it.
