I've listened to some American free jazz albums, and they really don't seem like anything special. They were probably ear melting for the generations in the 50s, though, but today, they're a relic of the past.

The same can't be said for European Free Jazz. TWET doesn't rely on screeching saxophones, nor an overall abundance of noise, but rather a meticulous arrangement of mysterious ambiance. Dark Awakening is exactly the mysteriousness I'm looking for, and Men of the North's rambunctious energy with a great drum solo near the end uses all ten and a half minutes very well! A good gateway into the EU side of free jazz.
