These are songs of war, work, and love, so they're as diverse as they are intense, and they are so serious, seriously-handled, and rich in female memory and cultural history that this album will leave you covering your mouth in shock at how good, how real, this music is. Everything a folkhead could ever want in music is here: politics, oppression, hard work, solidarity, culture, love, and protest. The beautiful, droning, aching, groaning violin cuts right to the core of my heart. These interpretations are a lovely, haunting vista of the past.
