At this point, I’ve heard a lot of jazz, and I’ve heard a lot of saxophone in jazz, but my breath is taken by the refrain of the first track. It is, to my ears, perfect saxophone phrasing, making the most of its spiritual quality. It’s a deep cry of love and longing, and I won’t deny its immediate resonance with me. The rest of the album is excellent free jazz spiritual meandering. Piano, bass, and Ibarra’s drums accompany, none of them afraid to innovate around Ware’s explorations and ascensions.
