The guqin is a seven-stringed Chinese instrument of ancient origin, associated often with philosophers and gentlemen. It is a symbol of refinement and wisdom, as Confucius is said to have played one of the first examples of the plucked instrument. On this scratchy, stripped-bare recording, the master Zha Fuxi plays simply and elegantly, demanding nothing of the listener, which is, I assume, just what the music is supposed to do: clear up some mental space for deep thought. Listen to this one next time you meditate.
