2* because of Streetlife.

For the rest it's 13-in-a-dozen jazzfunk-by-the-numbers lounge. The music you'll hear in the park when there's a band playing that doesn't want to upset anyone.

Holy saxophone baby!

The first song is definitely iconic, but there's a reason its more famous counterpart is far shorter. The rest of the album is the music that you listen to in the background. Not quite elevator/phone music like some reviews say, but certainly nothing special.

It says this is jazz-funk, but where's the funk?

Before today, I'd never heard of the Crusaders. They had a long history, spanning several band name changes before settling on the Crusaders (used to be the Jazz Crusaders, but they didn't want to be tied down to one genre, so they dropped the "jazz"). Once the smoke cleared, what was left was a jazz fusion band, which took aspects of jazz, funk, and R&B, and layered them into their unique blend of music.

This music sounds like a cross between elevator music, a porno groove, and upbeat, jazzy 80's sitcom theme songs. It is great stuff if you keep an open mind to it. I can see how people would find it bland, but I quite enjoyed it. Maybe it's because the band displays actual talent, unlike yesterday's dumpster fire.

There is a lot of great soloing by all involved on this record, and each song doesn't overstay its welcome. Even the opening song, Street Life, which is 11 minutes long. It certainly didn't feel that long. Maybe it was the inclusion of lyrics by Randy Crawford on that track, but it was a great song all around.

Overall, I enjoyed this album. Nothing really jumped out at me, but it was a perfectly acceptable jazz fusion record (unlike most of the others of this genre I've reviewed so far).

Favourite songs: Street Life, My Lady, Rodeo Drive (High Steppin'), Carnival of the Night

Least favourite song: Night Faces

I knew of the opening title track, it's got a catchy chorus, but no one needs 11 minutes of it! The rest is like background music at a casino.

Rated 6/10

Decent album for it being more jazzy. 3/5

Rated 8/10

Valaistujen katujen menevää jazzia. 4/5.

Didn’t mind this but was just a bit samey background music. didn’t do much for me.

funk!

Rated 10/10

They're having such a great time and I just want to be there with them.

Rated 4/10

A banger of an opening track with a robustness that supports its runtime! I've heard it a million times in films. So this is where it's from... huh.

Rated 6/10

Really great jazz-funk. That title track in particular is a real journey.

Rated 8/10

Street Lights is a poppin' 70s groove. There is plenty to groove on in this album but nothing really feels spicy or exotic in the jazz styling. It feels closer to jam band music than jazz.

Rated 4/10
