Ooo walk of life! An excellent song. This song alone puts this album in 3+ territory.
Love how so far away starts the album, love the twangy guitar.
Enjoyed the sax in your latest trick -- brings me back to grocery shopping with my mom in the early 90s.
Why worry is so chill and lovely
Enjoyed overall, 4*, although I wonder how much I like this because I *should*.
Rated 6/10
Money for Nothing is obviously a classic. I was not expecting the rest of the album to be so low key. The Mans Too Strong was interesting, started out with some cool country vides and had some rock thrown in for good measure. The rest was just meh. Somewhere between a three and four for me.

Amazing.

its a good one with iconic songs but not gonna be a favorite

Oh ok I have heard Walk of Life before... but idk if that's good or bad...
Overall it's ok but tainted by some slurs :\

Omar Hakim saves this for me. Don’t love it. Great guitar playing but it sounds too much like a bad Springsteen impression

This might be the most 80s sounding thing in existence.

This is my second Dire Straits review, and this is my favourite Dire Straits album. I have listened to it many times before, and am looking forward to listening again.
This is the 29th best selling album of all time. The album was so long, that in order to make it fit on an LP, the band had to trim some of the songs down a bit. The CD version of this record has the full versions of all the songs, as it was intended to be. Some of the songs can tend to wander a bit, but Mark Knopfler's crisp, flawless guitar playing makes it tolerable. Apparently Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) was consulted about how to get the guitar sounds featured in Money for Nothing.
This album was recorded on an island in the Caribbean, called Montserrat. While the band were there, they heard that Sting was also there on a wind surfing vacation. Mark Knopfler extends an invitation to Sting to join them for supper one night. After supper, Mark shows Sting what they had been working on, which was Money for Nothing. Sting loved the song, so Mark asks him if he thinks he could add anything to it. That night, they go into the studio, and Sting lays down the intro lyrics: "I Want My MTV", and the rest is history.
Overall, a phenomenal album today, and an easy 5.
Favourite songs: Money For Nothing, Walk of Life, So Far Away, Brothers in Arms, One World, Your Latest Trick, The Man's Too Strong, Ride Across the River, Why Worry?
Least favourite songs: None. The whole album is gold!

A Classic dad rock album. This actually starts really strong but tails off the second half of the album.
Rated 4/10
My dad played this a lot, I recall liking it until I became a teenager, then strongly disliking it. Re-listening now, great guitar work and production, but still invoked a strangely sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach. Mixed emotions. Is there such a thing as anti-nostalgia? 2.5

The Money For Nothing riff is the main attraction here, and while it is a very very good riff (all-time Great, even), the song’s still scuffed up by how badly the slurs aged. The rest of the album’s pretty mellow, contextually good listening
Rated 4/10
A couple of radio hits and a bunch of super slow synth rock. Meh.
Rated 4/10
Brothers in Yawns. I won't give this the long review and multiple listens it (probably) deserves. But this elevator-rock really does nothing for me.
'Brothers in Arms' and 'Money For Nothing' are great tracks in their own right. So there's 2 stars for this album.
But 'Walk Of Life' is just annoying, songs like 'Why Worry' and 'Ride Across The River' are nothing more than snoozefests without any depth.
'The Man's Too Strong' and 'One World' are unnecessary tracks.
Rated 6/10
Dire Straits are a band I’ve somehow escaped listening to really but this album is pretty enjoyable and very well-produced.
Rated 2/10
One star for the "Money for Nothing" intro. The rest is insipid, cringeworthy music for 80s dads to listen to in their Ford Cortinas. Not sure why a band from Newcastle are trying to sound like they're from Nevada too.
Rated 10/10
Absolutely awesome! One or two songs sound so 80s they border on pastiche, but still enjoyable. Title track, walk of life, latest trick, so far away, and of course, money for nothing are all-timers. What an album.
Rated 8/10
Oh hell yea. So Far Away is actually a great opener, Money For Nothing stuffs you right in the face with its hook in the most pleasant way, and Walk Of Life keeps it breezy and honky tonky. Your Latest Trick and Why Worry tread some pretty slow, cheeseball synth footsteps. Also Why Worry takes about a million years for noodling. docking a star for that. The Man's Too Strong is a great tune and doesn't get the respect it merits. Brothers In Arms is a little overly saccharine for me
