This is a concept album. The concept is that this is a score to a crime film that doesn't exist. This comes right from the album summary: "The music is almost completely instrumental except for occasional screams, vocal samples and a choir."... Fuck...

This album was utter garbage. I don't understand why this would be included on a list like this.... No redeeming qualities at all.

Favourite songs: Under Wraps

Least favourite songs: On the Wrong Side of Relaxation (entirely made up of whispering and screaming..... Wtf)... And the rest of this God forsaken album

To be honest he'd already lost me at "Moss Side". If it was anything like the area it was bound to be bad. And it was

The last track sounded like a poundland James Bond theme

Whoever added this album to the 1001 list needs to give their head a good wobble

This sounds like a copy of a movie soundtrack that wasn't made to be that good.

Turns out this guy was in Magazine. Also did original work for the Lost Highway soundtrack. What a dude.

Not sure this is worthy of a place on this list when actual movie soundtracks exist. Glad it is though as I got to learn a bit about old mate Barry.

Never heard of this album or artist, so I'm going in blind. I don't even want to read the wiki for a change. Very unusual/atmospheric intro track, almost like a film soundtrack. I think I recognise the second track though, "Under Wraps", not sure where from.

I'm enjoying this overall, however it does fade into the background a bit. It feels a bit disjointed, like a collection of tracks from different film soundtracks. Very interesting in places though.

Ok, so after a second closer listen, I think this is actually quite cohesive. It would work very well as a soundtrack to a lot of films. I love the blend of old and new styles here; this could easily soundtrack something like Casablanca, or something like Se7en. I can hear the influence of this album on music from throughout the 90s as well - particularly David Bowie's "Outside", some elements of NIN, the Prodigy, and (especially) the jazzy drum and bass that Amon Tobin released towards the end of the 90s. Overall, this is a very interesting, unique, and experimental album. Probably one of the most interesting I've discovered from this generator so far.

I cannot comment on how its quality as a film soundtrack would be, as I'm not an aficionado on a medium, but I know that as music to listen to, this stinks. It starts out harmless enough, with a mix of creepy but nevertheless intriguing ambient tracks and stereotypical film noir jazz that feels a touch outdated due to the late 80s production. However, once you get to the halfway point or so, it becomes just noise for the sake of being noise, with a lot of industrial sounding guitars to muddle the mix and make my ears bleed. Not helping is that there is very little going on beside these noises, as it lacks texture, or even some solid samples to keep things driving. It just gets lost in being shocking, as if it were to be paired with a scene meant to be overwhelming to the senses, but once you strip away those scenes that never existed, and just view this as music, it completely and utterly gets on my nerves. Once we finally return to something more musical on the closing track, even that bugs me with its macho brass and complete lack of intrigue other than just being loud. There's no emotion behind it, just a volume that bugs the Hell out of me, and I was sick of it nearly an hour after it started. It has moments that possibly could be appreciated, but it had exhausted any intrigue by the end of it all.

Rated 6/10

Pretty interesting concept album. Some good, some not as much.

Cool in concept. It definetly feels overdone. The Swinging Detective is pretty rad. But the issue is that this isn't a movie score. It is desperately trying to be one, but is not. So it feels the need to add on this extra cheese layer. It feels more suited to a video game soundtrack if anything.

Rated 4/10

No idea why this is on the list

Rated 6/10

This was OK, but it wasn't particularly memorable. A few decent tracks (I liked "Under Wraps" especially); maybe it would grow on me.

Rated 4/10

Rated 6/10

Some really interesting ideas and executions on this album. But it's still the fact we're listening to a few film-score tracks for different non-existent movies. Lots of sound that might be better if they were, indeed, used in movies instead as music on an album

Rated 6/10

An instrumental soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist. On the face of it it seems a pointless pretentious idea. funny I actually enjoyed this. Wouldn’t rush to listen to again but glad I listened to it once.

Rated 6/10

Moss Side Story is pretty good, but I'm not sure it fully works. Film music is always about being good but not drawing attention to itself, but these tracks feel more like conventional "songs." Great production though.

Rated 8/10

I'd definitely go see this movie!

Rated 6/10

Love the idea of creating a soundtrack to a hypothetical movie as the driving concept, but I find the results here somewhat lackluster and unfocused, especially when he throws on covers of things like the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" theme, then the concept doesn't even hold up.

Rated 6/10

Bizarre

Rated 4/10

Didn't really "get" it. Sure, nice enough concept, but one of the best 1001 albums ever?
