I'm now about halfway through this album whilst writing this, and I have to say, this is incredibly "nothing" music. It's like R.E.M, but far less interesting and notable. Every song comes in one ear and out the other, to the point of being tedious. We'll see if it does better in the back half, but if it doesn't, I can see this being a one star just for wasting my time.
Yep, this was a waste of time. I mean, why bother with a double album if nothing is gonna change in the whole runtime? Perhaps not a one star on a song by song basis, but as an album, this is pointless.
Rated 6/10
It's pretty good. It's quite upbeat. They kind of sound like a more energetic and slightly rockier REM. I don't think there's tons of variation across so many songs, but I didn't really mind, and it was a real easy-listening experience in general.
3.5 rounded down.
Rated 8/10
REM for people who don't like REM. Just love the structure of the songs and Bob Mould's introspective sadness, which feels a bit more genuine and less showy than Michael Stipe's.
Rated 4/10
This is practically blasphemy given the regard in which Hüsker Dü are held by middle aged white indie-loving guys like me, but I found this distinctly mediocre.
Rated 6/10
Good, but not great. Fairly derivative from their earlier stuff, but not to the point that it feels like a "last album"
Rated 6/10
I'd never heard of Husker Du before today. They sound like an alternative rock/punk rock band, that is like a shittier REM. After doing some research, I learned that Husker Du and REM were the two post punk bands of the 80's that changed the direction of rock music. REM became a superstar band, Husker Du never broke through to become any more than a cult favourite.
The first thing that struck me when listening to this album was how everything sounds overdriven, and kind of buries the singer under layers of distortion. For most of the album, I found I had no idea what the singer was even saying, so this review is largely based on the music moreso than the lyrics.
This album is a bit front loaded. After the song She Floated Away, the album became a bit bland. Not bad, but not as good as the first half of the record.
Overall, not a bad album. Nothing to write home about, but if it was on I wouldn't rush to change it at all. I don't think it had to be a double album. It kind of overstays it's welcome in that regard.
Favourite songs: Ice Cold Ice, She Floated Away, These Important Years, Visionary, Standing in the Rain, Could You Be The One?, Too Much Spice, "Friend, You've Got To Fall",
Least favourite songs: Bed of Nails

It might not be their best, and a bit more
poppy than their previous work, and the production is shite, but I'm still enjoying the hell out of this punkier version of REM
Rated 6/10
Pop punk meets REM alt rock. Enjoyable album but just on the long side, I can see the influence this would of had on pop punk bands of the 90s/00s. But the album is too long and a bit repetitive with a couple of stand out songs.
Rated 4/10
Clearly heralded a lot of how 90s rock ended up going, though I think I prefer other acts occupying that space. The particular guitar tone they lean on really grates on me after a while, and this one was a double album
Rated 4/10
I hadn't listened to this before, but I have listened to one of their earlier albums and never really got into it. Same for this one really, the guitar tone is too sharp for me and the singing isn't great at all. I found it quite repetitive; a few songs stuck out a bit for me but nothing particularly memorable. Too long as well!
Rated 6/10
I hadn't heard of Husker Du until recently, my initial thought was, oh this is what REM should have been like!
After a few listens, it's a bit long, but I'm enjoying it. I can see where other bands got their inspiration, hearing a lot of Green Day in there. 3.5
Rated 6/10
Too long but quite a few good tracks.
Reminded me of R.E.M.
Rated 6/10
Sounds like a crazed R.E.M.
Rated 4/10
This is fine. The guitar tone doesn't cut at all, so the sound seems a little too round for the style. Their sound is really reminiscent of a lot of bands, especially the vocal tone. Some of these songs I think could be really good, but the overly compressed sound and poor dynamic choices really hamstring this album's impact. Tell You Why Tomorrow is a perfect example.
Rated 4/10
I can't really say that this album did anything for me. It all kind of sounded the same and I didn't feel much of a connection to any of it. I guess I can see why the band opted to call it quits after this.
Rated 4/10
Not the strongest album of theirs in my opinion. Definitely miss the edge of their earlier stuff
