The Beatles are the ultimate "guess you had to be there" band. I'm repeatedly told they're revolutionary, but it just sounds old and weird and boring. This album specifically is supposed to be a masterpiece but it's kind of not. and it's too goddamned long.

3 stars. it doesn't suck, I guess, but it's also not very good. I suspect it's going to have a crazy high score because everyone who was born after 1960 has been gaslighted and bullied into thinking The Beatles are the pinnacle of music.

OdelayBeck

Rated 6/10

I’ve always wanted to like Beck more than I actually do. People love him, he’s a massive name/act, but I just don’t get him. I like Sea Change better than this album, but this one is OK. Probably a 3.5 if I could, but I never could understand its reputation, and that didn’t change after listening to it today.

This is surprisingly awesome. I always thought Megabeth was kind of Metallica’s slightly cringey little brother. Dave Mustaine got kicked out of Metallica and created a perfectly cromulent little side project. It bears saying that I’ve never actually listened to Megadeth - halfway because of the above, and halfway because I didn’t like their shirts/album covers. They just don’t look like things I would be interested in.

Anyway, it’s fucking great. 4.5 stars

It’s not really for me, but in the first 30 seconds I said to myself, “oh, this is kind of standard, mid-80s synth-goth. Then I realized: this is probably the band and/or album that started that sound. So three stars for being inventive and influential.

CutThe Slits

Rated 4/10

It’s kind of shit. It’s early punk, which I generally don’t like anyway. Why is this on the list? It’s all women, which is a change of pace, but it’s still early punk, so the ceiling is pretty limited. I will say that it seems to lean more into the bouncy ska-type punk than the angry aggressive noise-pop punk.

Whatever. It stinks.

it approaches decent on occasion, but ultimately it's just kind of standard hippie flower child pop.

TransformerLou Reed

Rated 4/10

It's OK. Lou Reed is massive and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. he doesn't have a good voice, and musically, this album is just kind of bland. Songs like New York Telephone Conversation are just confusing. It sounds like something that would be on an album for toddlers, and I mean that literally, not as a joke or a slight.

I don't know, man. It's not dreadful, I guess?

Overall, this is really pretty good. I don't know what year it came out, but at times you could convince me it was the 60s, the 70s, or the 2000s. I do like it, but I don't care if I ever hear it again, so I dont think I can give it a 4 star review. 3.5 if I could, because it really is quite decent. I suspect the album is actually late 60s, so I'm not sure why I've never heard any of these songs before.

Take the worst parts of rap, rock, and country, give it lyrics like:

“goo-goo, gah-gah, I gotta lotta,
Time to eat MC’s like a piranha.”

And you get this abortion of an album. This could potentially be the worst thing that came out of the 90s.

This one isn't for me. I don't mind Dylan, and I even like some of his stuff, but this one was TOO 60s for me. Very nasally and weirdly poppy. I didn't hate it, but it's certainly not my favorite.

4 seconds in and I think this is country music - fuck that shit. Apple Music says it's pop. Ok, fine, skip to next song. 2 seconds in, slide guitar. This is country music and can, therefore, go fuck itself.

I don’t know what this is, and I don’t know who it’s for. Like, is there a person out there that is like, “hell yeah, this is my favorite album!” Stranger things have happened, I guess, but I don’t see it. This is one of those times when I just cannot see any reason for this album to be on the list of 1000 I need to listen to before I die. It’s a guy with a piano and/or guitar with silly lyrics. Aren’t there hundreds of these albums? What makes this one special, because I can’t see it.

It’s ok? But weird. There are bits where I approach liking it, and times where I’m thinking wtf is this awful nonsense. Sometimes those things happen in the same song. I don't ofter look up the album before I give a rating, because I know I can be susceptible to reviews, but this one was so out there that I did - and apparently it is considered a masterpiece in the indie scene. I'll admit, it did get better on the second half of the album, and I connected a lot more with the lyrics and style, but it's still just OK to me.

A second Missy Elliot album? I’m skeptical that this is really necessary, but let’s see.

Still not sure if it was necessary, but this is probably a better album than her first. It has the mega hit Work It, so there’s that. Anyway, probably a 3.5 but I’m feeling generous.

Make YourselfIncubus

Rated 10/10

This is one of the best rock albums of the 90s. I still contend that S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is their magnum opus, but I concede that this is the album that made them all very, very rich. Make yourself is a massive departure from the albums that came before it. Fungus Amongus and the aforementioned S.C.I.E.N.C.E. were harder, more underground, and leaned more heavily into scratches and the rock-rap stylings that were the hallmark of the grossly named nu-metal movement. With this album, Brandon Boyd cut his dreadlocks, became a heartthrob, leaned more into his incredibly impressive singing voice, and became one of the biggest rock bands of the era.

5 stars, no notes, incredible, incredible album.

Viva HateMorrissey

Rated 8/10

I'm sure Morissey is a certain sound that you either like or you don't. I cannot imagine that he's a universal sound. That said, I happen to like his voice, and his style. I'm not a moody teen anymore, but I still think the sadboi aesthetic works for him. The music fits perfectly with his voice, both being *just* depressing enough, without needing to get the razor blade. And then, just when it might be getting too heavy, he throws in an upbeat sounding poppy tune. The lyrics, however, and still depressing as shit, though, because this is fucking Morrissey we're talking about.

I say it every time I hear old school rap, but it sounds so anachronistic. It's almost sweet, you know? Gang Starr is definitely seen as one of the OGs of the old school, especially in conscious rap circles. This album does a great job in telling stories, and the beats are catchy. Sadly, this was a bit before my time, and I think you probably need a heaping dose of nostalgia to elevate this higher than 3 stars.
