I’ve listened to this album before, but it’s never clicked with me the way it did this time.
There’s something genuinely moving about The Next Day. It feels reflective, almost haunted in places — Bowie looking back while still pushing forward. “Love Is Lost,” “Valentine’s Day,” and “Where Are We Now?” are all superb. The latter in particular has a fragile, emotional weight that really stays with you.
That said, while it’s a strong and deeply affecting record, I don’t think it quite sits alongside his absolute masterpieces. It’s powerful, but not quite transcendent.
Favourite track: Love Is Lost
Least favourite: I wouldn’t mind if I never heard Heat again — it doesn’t quite land for me.
Album artwork: An iconic cover. The defaced “Heroes” image is bold, clever, and perfectly in keeping with Bowie’s sense of reinvention.
