Rated 7/10

Listened to this with my sister and she said they were singing “like they just woke up”

The drums were good, very retro but after a while the tracks started to sound rather similar. Liked orange crush and turn you inside out more than average - the middle section is more rolling and akin to what I like

2 or 3. Beats are nice. Some tracks try to hard to say things about pop music (mainly tonite) which kind of falls into the repetition trap they are trying to criticise? It might have been better if each song were a bit shorter

What was that first track. Every time I opened Spotify, the cover scared me 😂

Usually don’t listen to this type of songs, the drums are cool but I don’t like the shouting as much (I can’t hear what they are screaming about)

There were tracks I liked like psychosocial bc they actually sang and the drums were fantastic

Like the beats and is rather angsty (I liked the BOY GET A JOB in Show Business). Usually I don’t listen to much rap / hip-hop but this was good

The beats are rather similar across tracks but they become more different towards the end of the album

Rated 10/10

Heard some of the tracks on their own previously and was worried that the album would be tired or repetitive but they were varied

Liked the rhyming and rhythm in the album - especially in I know what I know!! The beats seem very inspired by African music and I’m glad he actually did collaborate with them

Gets more rock-like towards the end. Sometimes he does the talk-singing but he says some lyrics really quickly so there is still some cadence to it

Although I just found out he snuck into South Africa under apartheid, I’m inclined to read the album as a testament to intercultural creative diversity

Initially I wanted to give it a 3 (nice but not my style) but the album didn’t get boring and the guitar was really cool

Some of the tracks were a bit strange (no lyrics, under a minute) but overall it was a nice listen

WOW I REALLY LOVED THIS ALBUM

I was shocked by the Erik Satie. There were tracks that were very very long (Blues Pt2 and the last two tracks) but it’s the first time I’ve heard jazz instruments in rock (maybe due to own ignorance)

Anyway the mix of saxophones / horns / trumpets (?) made the music catchier and also more interesting to me… so I had to save all of them. It sounds very inspired by black music

Between 3 and 4

Liked the instruments and songs are generally easy and pleasant to listen to

Slightly repetitive (same instruments but different moods) and did not like his voice bc he sounds more like he is speaking than singing

Sometimes he is just stringing words together and you can tell he is trying hard to be deep and give meaningful commentary (leopard-skin pill-box hat) which doesn’t really resonate but I don’t mind that too much

Cool guitar playing it grew on me towards the end

Songs sound very similar but the middle of the album is a bit slower and tame. It ramps up so the later tracks are longer with a lot of solos

Liked the drums and electric guitar which made for some great bangers!! Lady’s voice somehow sounds a little slanted..? It’s whiny and wheedling at times which I’m not sure if I like

Thought the tracks would be very similar but Sunday Girl was more cheerful and less aggressive than the first half

A lot of wailing: album gets progressively more unhinged as she starts skipping and adds some electronic stuff

Under Ice sounds like it could be a track to some art dance thing
Waking the witch has a monstrous voice
Jig of life is has a hybrid Scottish Irish dance going on

Some people might find it experimental and refreshing but I overall I do not really like it bc it is loud and wailing
