VeryPet Shop Boys

Rated 6/10

3 Pet Shop Boys albums is a bit much, bit I get why this was included. This blends the Pet Shop Boys with all the contemporary 90's House and Pop sounds. This album sounds really goofy to me, in a fun way. The lyrics feel kind of nonsense and the album has this air of just wanting to make dumb fun goofy songs with synth's and samples. There is not that much substance to it though, Go West is the big song here but that's still a somewhat wacky cover of an already goofy goober song.

★David Bowie

Rated 8/10

David Bowie is a music chameleon who can always make new music styles work for himself. This album has to be his most eclectic one, picking out music from pretty much everywhere. The title track is one of the greatest openers of the past years. That said, I like it but don't really love it. A lot of the tracks are nice, but I don't really love them. It's not an album I really come back to all that often. Also, I found it sounds quite uplifting for an album embracing death.

Finally got around to listening this one, 3 weeks later. It's the Doors, it's a really solid late 60's hit machine. I find the first side, the Hard Rock Cafe side, to be my favorite. Just has a few more hits and more edge than the other side. Stylistically, it really falls between their early and later work, and that's where it sits in the discography as well.

NevermindNirvana

Rated 10/10

Really great and VERY obscure album nobody's ever heard of. It's more polished than other Nirvana records production wise, but it works really well here. The songs here have a real edge to them while still sounding clear. Lots of great songs here and Kurt Cobains vocal performance is one of the best in Rock music.

Very energetic and uplifting jam. It does lack a bit of the political edge that other Fela Kuti works have though. Still, it's a very good jam, even if not all that live. The origin of how this album came to be is very interesting and kind of opened the door to more contemporary African music in Europe. It's nice hearing Fela Kuti playing the organ and the drumming here is excellent as with all Fela Kuti and Ginger Baker works. Doesn't really grab me as much as a lot of other Fela Kuti work though.

I spent a while trying to figure out when this album really started, until I eventually found out that it doesn't really start at all. I guess I don't really like Tango. Tango here mixes with the more conventional dance music like oil and water do. There was some great percussion throughout but it was ruined by the rest of the musical choices here. It's a load of scraps of what could be songs, I really struggle to think who this album was made for.

I don't dislike it, but near 80 minutes of Christina Aguilera's intense vocals and musical style is a bit much. The hits are good, some of the other songs are alright and a bunch on here is pretty forgettable. There was a lot more R&B in here than I expected. I think this album would have been better as a single CD, with some of the less memorable songs cut off or kept for a deluxe edition or something.

TapestryCarole King

Rated 8/10

What a coincidence, decided to listen to this album for the first time yesterday and today it pops up in the generator. A lovely little album. The songs are all really gentle and pleasant without transforming into easy listening singer songwriter slop. Carole King has a nice voice and the backing crew plays calm as well. She is a great songwriter and knows how to play her songs herself as well, was surprised to find out there were no covers here. Just a nice album all around.

Paris 1919John Cale

Rated 8/10

When listening to this yesterday I liked it but wasn't really able to pay attention, so I relistened it again. Safe to say I still like it. John Cale always brought the experimental edge to the Velvet Underground and continues that path here, albeit a bit more muted. This album isn't all that crazy, but it makes use of a lot of instruments that weren't really commonplace at the time. Songs here are nice and varied and make for an enjoyable listen. I really love his strong Welsh accent as well.

Has to be one of the most mainstream sounding alternative bands of the 90's. It's not bad but it really doesn't stand out in the crowd. Their biggest song on Deezer is the Mrs Robinson cover with the groovy bassline and that's the most memorable one to me. It was a pleasant enough way to fill up 40 minutes but I don't really think I'll listen to it again. It kind of feels like one of those albums you have to grow up with to form a bond with it.

6th listen of a Tim Buckley album and like the 4th listen of this one in particular. I am slowly starting to get it and click with it a little more. It's pleasant and intense at times, but I feel it requires constant attention to get a little more out of it that I don't have with other albums of this era and niche. It certainly had some nice parts. I really liked I never asked to be your mountain and some others. But still, I wish I could enjoy it more.

PumpAerosmith

Rated 6/10

It's not really a great album, but it's goofy and pretty fun to listen to. I can't really take it all that seriously and I hope the band didn't either. The cover is two trucks humping each other and the most famous song on here is about having sex in an elevator. It's 80's dumb rock, but in a fun way rather than a cringey way like Def Leppard or Motley Crue. It has some decent songs and the 80's cheese isn't all that bad on here, even.

GarbageGarbage

Rated 8/10

Rock, Pop, Indie,m Grungey masterpiece. Starts off really strong and stays that way throughout. The production is really great on here as well. I like a bunch of the songs on here, Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains and As Heaven As Wide are all great IMO. Towards the end a few of the songs interest me a bit less and it does rely a bit on the strength of the singles, but a really good listen nonetheless.

HejiraJoni Mitchell

Rated 8/10

My favorite Joni Mitchell album. The story telling is sublime and I really love the instruments on here, Joni Mitchell's guitar sounds so pleasant here. The first few tracks on this album are some of the best songs out there. I feel it lulls on the second half of the album thouhh. The songs there are still nice but a bit more dull to me.

ShleepRobert Wyatt

Rated 6/10

A bit mixed on this one. For an album made by a guy who had been making albums for 30 years up to that point it sounds remarkably fresh. It's still rooted in Prog rock, but it seems to take from a miriad of other genres that were relevant at that point in time. Songs are pretty short and concise and every song here differs from one another. It's beautiful at times and bizarre at others. That said, I don't really click with it myself. It was nice but the vocals could be hit or miss and not every idea was that grabbing to me.

Very much a 60's album. The entire first half of the album is pretty much one song, and the second half isn't all that different. Like contemporaries, they use this as a springboard to turn it into some hellish and endless psychedelic jam. Screeching guitars and this almost tribal atmosphere to it for pretty much the entire record. It's not an album I always want to listen to, but when it hits it really hits.

The PredatorIce Cube

Rated 10/10

This can hang with the greatest Hip Hop albums of the early 90's. This is strong song one after another. Long, but filled with variety and skits inbetween that actually added to the powerful messaging of the album amidst the LA riots and tensions. The songs differ enough from one another and cover enough topics for this not to get stale at any one point. Can't find any fault with it, just really enjoyable.

Best album of 1969, according to the Grammy's. Perhaps there were more fitting albums from that year, looking from a modern perspective. Still, it's a good album. This combines a lot of the cool sounds of the era together. Folk Rock of the Band combined with jams and downright Jazz-like songs. The hit singles off this are my favorites here. Brass band Rock like this hasn't really stood the test of time like some other genres, so it's perhaps not the most welcoming album for people who only listen new stuff.

There are a whole lot of ideas on here, but almost none of them stick. It's one of those albums I should like based on my tastes but never really clicked with. The shorter songs don't have any reoccuring hooks and don't really do anything. After Corona the album kind of improves and gets some more fun riffs and basslines in. Has some nice parts but not one I'd relisten often.

Scott 2Scott Walker

Rated 8/10

Scott is the best English translator of Jacques Brel works. He is the only artist who has the iconic voice and eye for orchestral backing that Jacques Brel has as well. His songs are the highlight on this album. A lot of the other songs I find to be a bit less interesting, although a few like Windows Of The World were nice as well. A number of forgettable songs on here drags it down for me. Still, I am a big fan of Scott Walker and this 60's era of bombastic Baroque Pop, so I still really enjoyed Scott 2.
