This is my favorite Flaming Lips album. The loud-ass drums on Race For The Prize alone would make this a five star album for me. Everything else is just gravy. Yes, the singing is not great, but it’s so earnest.

You can definitely tell Queen was finding their sound here but it wasn’t quite there yet. More similar to Genesis than what they would do on Sheer Heat Attack or A Night At The Opera. It’s good, but I think I would rather just listen to Genesis. The drumming on the first half especially is really good. Favorites were Father To Son, The March Of The Black Queen, and Seven Seas Of Rhye.
Rated 4/10
This album was disappointing to me. The self titled Bad Brains album is an incredible blend of hardcore punk and reggae and this… isn’t that. This leans into the hard rock and metal stylings of the 80’s. It’s good for what it is, but comparing it is a letdown. Favorites were I Against I and Re-Ignition.
Rated 6/10
This album flows really well and acts almost as a cohesive piece. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if Attached was slightly shorter. And boy they were not lying when they said those seconds would be quality. Favorites were Kein Trink Wasser and Quality Seconds.
Sticky sounds like Radiohead’s Creep. This album was good. The late 60’s garage rock influences are clear and are enjoyable. The singer sounds like Mick Jagger sometimes. I like how occasionally a synth or piano will make an appearance. Favorites were Wail, 2Kindsa Love, Rocketship, Can’t Stop, and Eyeballin.
Rated 4/10
Most of this faded into the background. Except for The Rough And The Quick with those absurdly sexual lyrics. I thought Alaska Street sounded interesting but I already forgot almost everything else here.

I really liked this one. The instrumentals are often flowing and understated, yet they occasionally feature additional instruments that keep things interesting like the clarinet on the title track or the harmonica on Furry Sings The Blues. Her lyrics match the vibe of being on the road and moving past the world in such a great way. Favorites were Coyote, A Strange Boy, Song For Sharon, and Black Crow.
Rated 6/10
A good chunk of these songs don’t do much for me, but the ones that do REALLY do. Really great lyrics and piano. Me And A Gun is lyrically devastating. I don’t want to listen to it again. Favorites were Crucify, Precious Things, Happy Phantom, and Little Earthquakes.
Rated 8/10
This album is humid as hell. I can smell it. Just a persistent late summer haze. Both nostalgic and melancholic. Loved it. I went years before realizing that the War On Drugs and the Cold War Kids were not the same band. Favorites were Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, An Ocean In Between The Waves, Eyes To The Wind, and Burning.
Rated 6/10
They definitely started to hit their stride on here. No need for covers to pad out the runtime. Definitely some of their best early material. Love the energy on some of these songs. Favorites were the title track, I Should Have Known Better, Any Time At All, and You Can’t Do That.
If the editor of this list was American this spot would be taken my Them Crooked Vultures. As it is this is a solid record made by a few very talented musicians. Probably not something I will go back to in its entirety. Favorites were 80’s Life, Kingdom Of Doom, Nature Springs, and the title track.
Rated 6/10
These songs are really interesting. Her voice continues to be the standout element, but the way she creates these worlds is really incredible. What she does on There’s More To Life Than This is mind blowing. Some of these songs just don’t really do it for me especially Like Someone In Love. Did not like that song at all. Favorites were Human Behaviour, Venus As A Boy, and Big Time Sensuality.
A bonus 15 minutes of the most expressive drum soloing I have heard was most appreciated. Everything here was really great. The often chanted vocals, the horns, the drums. Just a good time from beginning to end. The long songs never wear out their welcome. Favorites were Black Man’s Cry and Egbe Mi O.
Rated 6/10
The organ hit at 1:44 on Love The One You’re With is euphoric. I liked this one quite a bit more than Manassas. Maybe it’s a little overindulgent with the string arrangements, organs, choirs, and guest musicians, but it still sounds good. I was questioning why the guitar on Old Times Good Times was so good until learning it was Hendrix and yeah that makes sense. Favorites were Love The One You’re With, Old Times Good Times, Go Back Home, Cherokee, and We Are Not Helpless.
Rated 8/10
This is some good walking around music. Had me snapping and grooving down the street. The bass lines and rhythm guitar just really work. Favorites were Le Freak, Happy Man, and I Want Your Love
Rated 4/10
Meh. I just listened to this album twice and I don’t remember much of it. The vocalist sounds like Billy Idol sometimes. This is fine, but I will probably not go back to it.
Rated 6/10
I had no idea that I already knew a couple of these songs beforehand. Good album. Solid band and great vocals. Favorites were The Phone Call, The Wait, Kid, Brass In Pocket, and Mystery Achievement.
Rated 6/10
Despite the vocalist being an all around horrible person I still enjoyed this album. Maybe because it is essentially Nine Inch Nails but not quite as good. Another one to add to the folder of white guys saying the N-word. Favorites were The Beautiful People, Tourniquet, Antichrist Superstar, and The Reflecting God.
I didn’t even miss the guitar. I was ready to absolute hate this and tear into it after the first thirty seconds, but then the rest of the album happened and I was sold. The dual vocalists really work here. Very reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane. Super interesting early experimentation into the use of electronics. I guess Mac Miller and ID Labs really liked this one too with how Coming Down became Smile Back. Great album. Favorites were Hard Coming Love, The Garden Of Earthly Delights, Where Is Yesterday, Coming Down, and The American Way Of Love.
Rated 8/10
This album was really great. The guitar riffs are chunky and the vocals are killer. Everything is so expressive here. I definitely liked it more than Celebrity Skin. Favorites were Violet, Plump, Jennifer’s Body, and Rock Star.
