A bit of a mixed bag for me. I like the White Stripes but this one has more duds on it than their other albums. Still, especially the harder rockers are great songs. I loved Blue Orchid and Instinct Blues. As Ugly As I Seem is a beautiful slow and simple song. A lot of the other songs range from unmemorable to not that liked by me. Still a well liked and nostalgic album for me though.

Too much marimba for my taste

I couldn’t be happier that this album is on here. It very much changed my life. White Blood Cells and Elephant made me a White Stripes fan, but this one kickstarted my Jack White obsession and opened the doors to looking at music in an entirely different way. I don’t care if other people view it as inferior to the rest of their catalog; I love every single second of it.

The White Blood Cells - Elephant - Get Behind Me Satan run is incredible, but this is the weakest of the three.

Rated 8/10

Was dreading this one to be honest, after finding the other album of theirs bland

But this one was much better, I liked it! Still don't think it should be on this list though

Rated 6/10

Liked it, but maybe not as much as some of their other albums. I like the ones with more energy and distortion a bit more

Rated 8/10

That’s a very good 4.

This is my first proper White Stripes album, and all I can say is… I really wish Seven Nation Army wasn’t the big song for them, because it undermines their talent as a band that can cover this wide of a musical net. The variety of instrumentals and genres and soundscapes covered here is incredibly cool and really enjoyable to me. Blue Orchid, ironically, is sort of a bad tone setter – it makes the album feel like it’s gonna be a full rock album, but when it immediately jumps into xylophones and marimbas and maracas and all of these other instruments, it really unlocks the potential of the album.

There’s great stuff on here, but I think my favorite one was The Denial Twist; it felt like a damn Cage the Elephant song a few years early, and I loved that a lot. Little Ghost is a close second for me; it’s a goofy country style song, and I’m a sucker for that kind of sound. Overall, though, this is a pretty damn good album. It’s not a 5 off of a first listen; I think there’s just a few too many filler tracks in here (Red Rain, in particular, is egregious about this) to make the entire album feel as satisfying as it could have been, but it can absolutely grow on me. It’s a VERY good 4, though.

Sure it's a bit different, but it still sounds just like the White Stripes. Only one song I didn't really like, a whole bunch that I did, and an overall great sound. And 'Blue Orchid' rocks 🤟

Loved this one when it was new, and again now. Jack is a genius.

Rated 6/10

While this album isn't in the style of music I am used to from The White Stripes, I still found the album somewhat enjoyable. There are a few songs that stood out to me.

I'd consider this a high 3/5.

Rated 10/10

One of the few arguably flawless discographies in music. They're all classics.

Rated 6/10

Good album, don’t think it’s on a par with elephant, but still different enough to be considered for the list.

Rated 8/10

I think I would like other albums like them. I generally enjoyed the sound but struggled to connect to this

Rated 6/10

I don’t like this one as much as Elephant, but I still enjoyed it. The instrumentation on this is more diverse than prior records from them including lots of piano and even some marimba. Favorite songs were Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, and Take, Take, Take.

Rated 8/10

Damn this is a lot better than I remember.

Rated 8/10

Favourite songs: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues, Little Ghost

Least favourite songs: The Nurse, As Ugly As I Seem, Red Rain (fucking xylophones should be left in the kindergarten classroom)

4/5

Rated 8/10

Messy and lo-fi and chaotic, but you have to hand it to Jack and Meg for not letting the fame and money from "Seven Nation Army" go to their head, and just carrying on with what they do best.

Genius

Rated 6/10

Part of the appeal of The White Stripes is Meg’s rudimentary yet powerful drumming and Jack’s sloppy but memorable guitar riffs. On this album, they seem to have taken that ethos and applied it to piano, but I’m not sure it pays off in the same way. There are a couple excellent tracks on this record (“Blue Orchid,” “My Doorbell”), but a lot of it just doesn’t quite work.

Still, I like listening to it. My heart says it’s a 4, but my brain says 3… I think my brain wins.
