Benchmark for mashup work. First heard of Girl Talk back when Neil Cicierega was making his Mouth series, though having now finally listened weirdly I think I prefer Neil C’s style, which is much less slick, but has funnier jokes woven into everything
Anyways this is excellent brain floss. Clears out anything I may have had stuck in my head, banishes all earworms

Man, I love Bloghouse stuff. While Neil Cicierega's Mouth series is mostly goofy with somw great tunes as a bonus, this is the opposite with it being one giant hour dance album, that sometimes makes you chuckle. It's awesome, and for 2008, absolutely inspired.

The best in the game at mashups. I remember finding this on CD back when it came out and buying it not knowing what I was even getting myself into. So many nostalgic bangers mixed in here!

This is literally 100% samples that are mashed together in a kind of house /party mix style. So Girl Talk, in my mind, did nothing except mix a bunch of different smash hits from a bunch of different genres together and overlay it with house beats. This is the same complaint I have with that News at 11 album I had a while ago. Buddy did literally nothing to create music. This is more of an art project than music.
Yes it's catchy and yes he did a good job of mixing genres and styles together, but is it original music? Definately not. Apparently this genre of heavy sampling and mixing has a name..... Plunderphonics...... The more you know!!
Apparently in this 53 minute album, dude sampled 300+ other songs/artists. What I hate about this style is it feeds off of people's nostalgia. When they hear so many familiar songs, they tend to gravitate towards the music. So this knob is getting rich off of the success of 300 other artists, not his own talent.
Favourite songs: Like This, Still Here, Shut the Club Down, In Step, Play Your Part (Pt. 1)
Least favourite songs: Here's the Thing, Don't Stop
3/5 was it catchy. Yes. Was it necessary. No

Did Girl Talk start the main stream mashup only craze? If not he epitomized it. There is so much to love, so many moments of glee at the embodiment of oxymoron. Does it deserve top marks? Don't know, but it gives me top mark joy

Sample heavy, sounds like a scrapbook, sometimes in a good way, but often not.

Very impressive sample albums flows very well and some real classics in there.

It's like Jive Bunny lying on his back, naked, and pissing all over the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. A crass, tasteless, but admittedly very impressive achievement.

This is a perfectly enjoyable to listen to series of mashups. But is it an album? That I'm not sure about.
