Maybe if this was my firsts The National album or if I was having a better day this would be five stars, but I still feel the same disappointment I felt the first time I listened to it when it came out. It's missing some frantic energy that I adore about them. Still very good though.

One of the Indie factory defaults

Rated 6/10

The first half of this album was much better than the other 2 National albums I've listened to. It's interesting to note that when I read reviews of this album this morning, the die hard National fans were saying this is one of their weaker albums. I, as an outsider, see this as one that I can actually tolerate. It's less depressing, and the musicians seem to care more about playing their instruments on this record, so to me it's one of their stronger albums. Weird.

Goes to show ya how versed I am in depressing indie: not at all. So when they start to inject some hope and happiness into their material I'm like "fuck yea, this is better" and the die hard indie fans are like "eew, wtf is this, close the door, your letting in light...."

Overall, better than the other National albums. Definately front loaded. But I will still keep The National with Peter Mansbridge over this...

Beautiful

Rated 6/10

A fan of the national happy to see another album by them.

Rated 6/10

Sounds like about 40% of the original list, and 30% of the suggestions - slightly worthy, fairly dry folksy Americana, which will always find an audience but doesn't need (or deserve) as much representation in the book.

Rated 8/10

Really solid album as expected from The National, but it wouldn't be the first, second, or even third album from them I would personally choose to include here. I think a bit more selectiveness makes sense.
