Apparently you have to take a lot of drugs to enjoy this. Nasty looking cover, nasty sounding singer, nasty lyrics. They wanted to put more reverb on this recording, but had already used the entire UK supply for this record.

Best songs were the ones without vocals. Singer sounded like he was on a different song than the band most of the time.

“Rock band does ecstasy and makes a psychedelic record” is such a trope but it almost always hits. This is a great example. I love how rough it is. It feels like constrained chaos.

I don't understand why this album gets all the hate. I mean yeah it does sound really dated, and 80s dated is not the best. But I rather liked it. Not world-changing in any way, but it was a good sort of 80s indie, would-be-psychedelic pop rock. I didn't feel the need to listen to the entire 2+ hour collector’s edition that was all that was available on Spotify, but the 10 songs on the original release made a fun album to hear this morning. I think I'd probably buy this record if ever came across it in the shop, however unlikely that would be... 3.5/5 but rounding down because 4 is too much.

Right away, I'm bummed. Why is this on here? 1*
I will go by the wikipedia tracklist and refuse to sit through 2 hours of this crap.
Was lazyitis trying to replicate the Beatles?

The problem with ecstasy is that it convinces untalented people that they're making good music.

Better than I thought but…. 2.3

Every British. Very 80’s.

I’ve always loved the Madchester sound, and whenever I listen to these guys, I just feel like dancing <3
To hell with the haters

There were a couple tracks here I could see getting into in this album, they've got that solid new wave/dance-rock feel to them that I could see being something I would enjoy out and about. However, the album seemed to get aggressively more British with each track, and not in a good way. We're talking the most annoying acts from Britpop assuredly took influence from this album, and didn't realize that iconic whine was something that is grating on the ears. Some of the instrumentals are fine, its all very fine, but after a while it just was all blending into the same thing, with little to make it stick out.

I Really enjoyed pills and thrills, this one just isn’t as good, and therefore probably doesn’t need to be on the list.

I like the atmosphere on this. It's got a manic energy to it, and there's some interesting things going on musically. I like the psychedelic guitars. It's quite unique.
3.5 rounded down.

I can understand how some people would like that. But man what a drag.

This is a sold meh from me.

I like the music, but the lyrics are generally awful. For example, Bring a Friend really caught my ear and I was prepared to list it as a favorite track, until I saw the crass lyrics. Tons of stoner lyrics in other songs. Wrote for Luck is a good song and the lyrics aren't terrible. They occasionally reminded me of the band James who are not on the 1001 albums list but should be (damn, I even just saw that Happy Mondays opened for James. That makes the omission even worse). I'll give it a 3 because the songs sounded good, but no higher because of the lyrics.

Takes a while to click but once the fug clears it's great, love the grooves and just the general vibe. 3.5 rounded up

Madchester!!!
