Another day, another Dylan album! Despite being released some 30 years after his heyday, this is still great, bluesy, tuneful, and wise.
Rated 6/10
This is my first introduction to Bob Dylan for a full album, and I have a feeling this isn't the best example of the heights this man can reach. This wasn't bad at all, but a lot of times it felt like a call back album, not something from the late 90s. It wasn't particularly innovative or interesting, and was really only saved by a few of the songs working with his voice, which I can see why its considered grating here. A completely middle of the road album at the end of the day.

Eerder kregen we Blood On The Tracks van Bob.

The guy is not a great singer, and by this point his lyrics kind of sucked too. "trying to get to heaven" is kind of funny if you imagine heaven is a club with a strict doors close time, but most of the other songs are fairly dull.
With an album this late in a legendary act's career, you have to wonder if it suffers in comparison to his earlier work, or would never have seen the light of day if anyone else recorded these songs. With this album, I think it's the latter

Why do I feel so indifferent about Bob Dylan?
This album didn't do anything for me, mediocre.
Rated 8/10
Love the atmospheric sound here and Dylan's aged voice has such a powerful gruffness that I really enjoy. Lyrically it's some of his finer work as well.
Rated 6/10
A bit of blues, a bit of roots rock, a bit of soul, and maybe even a bit of country. All of it is touched with the dust of a road worn band, and the fuzz of distortion and reverb. I really enjoy the overall sound of the album.
It's a mostly subdue and introspective album that maintains the lyrical poignance that you would expect from Dylan. Standing way out from the crowd on this album is the track 'Make you Feel My Love'. It's a gem of a love song that I'm surprised I've never heard come across before (either original or covered). Whoa is me, and my musically sheltered life.
Rated 4/10
Love Sick into Dirt Road Blues is an excellent contrast in tones. I still don't like Bob's diction. And after a while its just the blues. Tryng To Get To Heaven is a perfect example of Bob Dylan ruining a perfectly good song with his voice. Jesus I can't stand this guy's voice. Cold Irons Bound is a good tune, which I think is the only real reason I don't give this a 1 star. Highlands is bullshit.
Rated 8/10
Though I'm not as big of a fan of Dylan after Desire, I must say this is quite an enjoyable record where he seems to have established a sort of template/persona of sorts for his subsequent records. How Dylan got his groove back.
