I'm not scared off by fucking killer guitar riffs and tones, delightfully strange vocals, and musicians who owe as much to The Residents as they do Dead Kennedys. Really, really cool stuff. High 3.5 stars with room to grow.

3.5/5

What a name for a band and album. Trash album though.

Rated 6/10

Very shrill. Quite funny in places. Overall, however, the album is too exhausting for me to want to listen to it again. 3/5

The Butthole Surfers’ music is not horrendous but it is full to the brim with affectations, disparate ideas threaded together with an implied “can you believe we just did that?” It lacks the adolescent charm you’d hope for. It also lacks the core of an amazing idea which you can hang the rest of an experimental rock album off of. I like that it’s very manic, weird and full of variety - but that’s about it. Ultimately they’re aiming for “woah!” and “huh?!” but instead inspire “hmm.”

Rated 2/10

Just plain weird.

Rated 4/10

This is one of those albums that I can respect and appreciate, but I don't think I can like it.
It sounds like the unholy spawn of Nirvana, Black Sabbath, and The Residents.

Black Sabbath right off the bat with Sweat Loaf, basically just turning Sabbath's Sweet Leaf into a noise rock song. Graveyard sounds like the noise bridge or breakdown to a weird Nirvana song like Milk It (My favorite Nirvana song by the way).

Pretty sure U.S.S.A samples or recreates the looping machinery sound from Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine? At least, it sounded like that.

Kuntz kinda sounds like a Middle Eastern/Indian tune fed through the context of a 60's psychedelic track.

But mostly there's not an entire song I can sink my teeth into on this. I think it's really just Pittsburgh to Lebanon and Human Cannonball that are the only tracks resembling a fully formed song, not that they were trying with the other ones. Whereas the other ones run the gamut from a looping musical phrase or just noise rock jamming.

But yeah. It's a fantastic album, definitely one to be respected for it's creativity, influence (On grunge and sludge), and boundary breaking; but in the context of this project, I can't really give it anything higher than a 2. It's not one I have much interest in going back to.

Some alright songs on it but most of them are just noisy and chaotic.

Rated 6/10

I know the BS are super influential in indie rock, but this is the first time that I have listened that I really enjoyed. Not the best album, but has its moments. Love that the Orbital sample comes from the first song. 3.5/5

As nightmarish and gross as this is in places, you do have to give them props for doing something so completely different from the vast majority of music. Band name is a 10/10 as well.

Rated 8/10

I don't know what the fuck I just listened to, but I like it.

Rated 4/10

This isn’t bad per se but it feels like an inside joke that I’m not a part of.

Rated 8/10

Man... brings back memories. Still, not anything extraordinary musically, but 4 it is!

Crazy, crazy album. Ordinarily I hate noise rock, but they manage to make noise without injury - it's actually noise that fits the music. Sludgy and weird - I know this is currently the 20th worst rated album on this site, but I actually like this kind of weirdness. Underneath the weird are very cool sludgy riffs. I wouldn't listen to this anywhere that anyone else could hear...but I liked it (a little concerned about the fact that I liked it, but hey). Favorite tracks: Sweet Loaf, Graveyard (totally weird, but I like the underlying bass and drums), Pgh to Lebanon (sludgy blues), The O-Men, 22 Going on 23 (dark and oppressive, matching the subject matter). Oh, and it's hysterical that all the "heys" in HAY are the sound of cows mooing, played in reverse double speed.

Rated 8/10

Better than Coldplay.

Rated 4/10

lmao

Rated 4/10

Before today's album, the only Butthole Surfers song I knew was Pepper, which is a solid song. This album was 95% noisey garbage with "Human Cannonball" stuck in the middle. Human Cannonball is a really solid track, the rest of the album is largely unlistenable. Fuck I hate noise rock. If you have no talent, don't waste my time.

Favorite songs: Human Cannonball, 22 Going On 23, Kuntz

Least favorite songs: The O-Men, U.S.S.A., Graveyard, Pittsburgh to Lebanon, Weber, Hay

How did a band with such a dumb name produce such a smart album?

Rated 6/10

First of all, I gotta say that the album name and the band name is fucked up in the most amazing way. Love it.
Second of all, this is so noisy that it becomes interesting. I really have no idea why, but it intrigued me. It's not that good though.

Rated 2/10

This is one of those bands that I've heard about for my entire life, but have never actually listened to. Would have preferred to keep it that way.
