I think I had listened to this before, but probably a long time ago. I recognised Stagger Lee, the PJ Harvey song and the Kylie Minogue song. Overall a very interesting and well written album. Not one I would be in the mood to dive into often, but I would listen again.
Rated 6/10
That was interesting, but tried to carry and unearned weight. It didn't say anything, just reveled in darkness. It was interesting, but I cannot say I enjoyed it.
Rated 8/10
This album has got such a sense of style and mood to it. From the cover alone the tone is set, and the album really carries that promise through the whole thing.
I'd had 'Where the Wild Roses Grow' on my main playlist for years, but this was another classic case of not delving into the album as a whole. I think I did once, but maybe got unstuck after the first song, which frustratingly is a bit of a slog.
It picks up a lot from there. Stagger Lee has some real bite, and that's followed by Henry Lee which is a lovely duet. Outside of those, I thought The Kindness of Strangers was also one of the better individual tracks.
O'Malley's Bar threatens to derail it as it's SUCH a long samey song again, but it's then finished off with Death Is Not the End which is a great closer.
As an album and overall piece of art I think it's very good.

O'Malley's Bar wears out its welcome so much it knocks this entire thing down a peg

Rated 10/10
What is there to say about this album that hasn't been said. It's dark, funny, profane, clever and beautiful.
Beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.

Today's album is my second by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. This is the album once recommended to me by a friend.
This is a very dark album, whose entire theme circles around death and murder. Listening to this album is like listening to a true crime documentary. Nick's writing style and vocal delivery gives an overwhelming feeling of dread and gloom. He pairs with female vocalists such as: Kylie Minogue and PJ Harvey to inject some beauty to his baritone voice. The whole record proceeds through so much death and murder, and finally ends with a song of hope (a cover of Bob Dylan's "Death is Not the End") to pull the listener out of the darkness.
This album is beautiful in the most fucked of ways. Nick has a way of genre jumping between albums. The first album of his I reviewed was called The Boatman's Call, which was an intimate acoustic album which featured Nick singing with piano accompaniment. Very soft and mellow. This album was rock oriented (kind of goth rock in a way) and VERY dark.
I loved this album. At first, the shock of the material kind of turned me off, but eventually, it won me over, and upon second listen, I really looked past that, and really listened. This is a piece of art! The only way to enjoy this record is by listening front to back.
Favourite songs: Stagger Lee, Where the Wild Roses Grow, The Curse of Millhaven, The Kindness of Strangers, Song of Joy, O'Malley's Bar, Death is Not The End
Least favourite song: Crow Jane

I find the concept generally repellent, and the execution just seems like some kind of half assed inside joke. Put this on the stereo and I'd be out the door before the first song was over.

Varsin nautinnollista synkistelyä maanantaihin. Jos Nick Cave olis syntyny tähän aikaan niin sillä varmaan olis True Crime-podcast. Onneks ehti alta pois!
Rated 6/10
I like Nick Cave, at times. And other times I don't. It is 100% dependant on mood for me, and I don't think I was really in the mood for this one, at least not this time around.
Rated 8/10
Song Of Joy gets this off to a spooky start. Curse Of Millhaven is rad. Wild Rose is okay but not my favorite on the album. O'Malley's Bar is a long string of murderous delight.
Rated 10/10
Exceptional. I obviously knew the duet with Kylie, but I loved pretty much all the other songs too.
Not quite a concept album, but with a clear theme, and musically really interesting
Rated 8/10
Lovely PJ Harvey duet.
