Can't listen on any streaming service. Rating this a 1, not the album, but the cover.

Oh it’s finally happened, I’m gonna write a song by song commentary:

Frownland: Oh yeaaa, I can see this will be difficult. Sounds like a younger child that’s finding their footing in music.

The Dust Blows Forward n The Dust Blows Back: Ok poetry breakdown… interesting

Dachau Blues: Bringing awareness to the holocaust I suppose. Just sounds like a drunk man doing karaoke but good message is being put out (I think??)

Ella Guru: This sounds like a relatively normal 60s rock song, but with a Capt Beefheart twist to it

Hair Pie- Bake One: 🤠 this is the emoji I use when faced with adversity. This was difficult to get through, but the guitar kinda brought it together.

Moonlight on Vermont: Had to look up the lyrics because I have no clue wtf he's saying. Even while looking at the lyrics, I have no clue of wtf he's talking bout. Very bluesy sound tho

Pachuco Cadaver: Kinda a vibe

Bill's Corpse: When I hear his voice, I imagine a man with the most jaundice-riddled eyes and stankest breath singing all up in my face

Sweet Sweet Bulbs: Honestly, great transition from the last song. I didn't even notice the last song had ended.

Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish: "In jest, incest, in jest, in just, in feast, incest" 🤠 wtf are we talking bout rn??? I'll give Capt this tho, that's an original sentence frfr. This album is an original experience tbh

China Pig: With the current economy, this hits different 😔

My Human Gets Me Blues: Believe it or not, I'm a fan of this. This may be the most coherent song on the album so far. Was he discussing gender dysphoria towards the end of the song??? Bro was really talking bout some difficult subjects in 1969... ahead of his time

Dali's Car: Short n sweet. Like it

Hair Pie - Bake Two: Another instrumental... I like. The sound on this Hot Pie is much more cohesive this time. I love to see upwards progression.

Pena: Damn Pena. Sounds like it's a frantic time, get better soon girly.

Well: well well.

When Big Joan Sets Up: Poor Joan. I hope she finds some comfort in her own skin one day. Aside from the story, the sound of this song sounds God awful to me.

Fallin' Ditch: Uhh ok. Not the worst sounding song.

Sugar n Spikes: This has a kinda theatrical feel to it. I could see this being sung in a musical, and I like that.

Ant Man Bee: I’m ready for this to be over.

Orange Claw Hammer: 🤠.

Wild Life: Either I don’t have the musical intelligence to be able to appreciate this or it’s truly ass. I get overwhelmed listening to such an abstract, abrasive song.

She’s Too Much For My Mirror: The yelling, I can’t do it.

Hobo Chang Ba: Patrick Star’s attempt at making a song. This is difficult.

The Blimp (mousetrapreplica): This is my favorite from the album thus far.

Steal Softly Through Snow: That guitar tho. Kinda fw this one as well.

Old Fart at Play: uhh.. ok.

Veteran’s Day Poppy: I MADE ITTT. Also, I’m grateful we ended on a high note.

Overall: This was FAR from my type of music and as long as I have free will I definitely won’t be listening to a single one of the songs. I would give this a 1, but it was kinda entertaining so it’ll get a 2

Apparently they rehearsed for twelve hours a day for eight months straight, to make it sound exactly as terrible as they intended. While their dedication is impressive, did they not realise they could just hire non-musicians and get the same result instantly?

And why do we trust that the final 8 hour session is actually what they intended? They could have practiced all that time, fucked it up a bunch of times in the actual session, and then released it. Who would know? They need an external auditor to verify it sounds exactly as shit as they intended.

The only people who like this are people who think they're in on some big joke on the listener. You can't like this sonically. Not because it's impossible for someone to enjoy, though I wager it is indeed difficult, but because, if you do actually enjoy it, you've not understood the album as the artist intended.

So, that being said, the album is kinda genius, but it's still bad music. The sad part is I still found it a more pleasant experience than some other albums I've heard on this list.

I have listened to an album previously on this list that wasn't on Spotify and I really liked it, so hopefully this one won't disappoint. I'm one song in so far and holy shit it's so bad it's good. I was reading the reviews and was confused why everyone was simultaneously hating it but thanking the artist for making it. Now I understand... You have to listen to it to understand and join the collective mindscape. I really like the album cover.

Shame this isn't on spotify, also the ratings on this thing make me mad because people on the site can't handle anything that's barely experimental

I’ve been waiting for this one. The Captain’s proficient songwriting ability (evidenced by his other record on here) grounds the dissonant, gesticulatory shambling of this record in a way that makes it clear he knows exactly what he’s doing at all times. The manically sardonic lyrics have their own brilliance. Of all the “out” albums on this lost so far (Spy vs Spy, The Residents, Bitches Brew, Velvet Underground self-titled, Einsturzende Neubaten, etc.) I think this is the greatest. I hate to say that it makes Tom Waits’s most eccentric experiments seem a bit pedestrian and derivative.

Rated 6/10

Maybe I’m not old enough to get this one. I understand and respect that it influenced a bunch of people who I respect, but I don’t feel the need to listen to it to respect its legacy.

Rated 4/10

you know what? Hell Yeah, Brother. (It still sucks)

Rated 7/10

This is album is insane. Like listening to a nightmare, but the more you listen the more it pulls you in and the more you want to chip away and know more and understand. But it always keeps hiding it self. And it's greatest trick is the more you listen to it the more you start to like how it sounds.

No album deserves to be on the list more than this one.

It's almost a 5 but off because it is a little long 4.5

Rated 2/10

Look, I don’t care how many times people insist you have to listen to this album to finally "get it", once was more than enough. Listening to this feels less like enjoying music and more like surviving an 80 minute hostage situation. It honestly sounds like a group of talented musicians were forced to tumble down a flight of stairs while all trying to play completely different songs at the exact same time.

I can appreciate the guts it took to record something this abrasive, but that doesn’t make it fun to listen to. It’s an absolute chore from start to finish, with zero rhythm or melody to grab onto. If the goal was to make the most headache inducing musical endurance test ever, they nailed it. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

Rated 2/10

not good, but not good in a way where i cant help be charmed by this nonsense. however im not gonna torture myself by listening to this more than once to "get it." i wont get it and its total ass but i understand why weirdos fuck with it

Rated 8/10

Well, here it is, the King of Weird Albums.
I’m just on the edge of breaking through and really digging this, but it’s just slightly out of reach currently.
4 stars… for now.

Rated 2/10

I wish I had the memory of a fish and could instantly forget Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and Trout Mask Replica.

I was actually expecting more from this. Earlier in the year I listened to Safe as Milk and really enjoyed it, so I came into this with reasonably high expectations. Unfortunately, this album and I simply did not get along.

The opening track, "Frownland", is possibly one of the most unpleasant things I have ever listened to. It feels chaotic, disjointed and completely impenetrable, and unfortunately things didn't improve much for me when "The Dust Blows Forward 'n the Dust Blows Back" followed it. Rather than pulling me into the album, the opening few tracks left me wondering what on earth was going on.

I understand that Trout Mask Replica is regarded as a groundbreaking and highly unconventional record, and I can appreciate the ambition behind it. The complex rhythms, strange song structures and complete disregard for conventional melody are clearly deliberate choices rather than mistakes. The problem is that none of it worked for me as a listening experience.

Maybe I simply prefer my rock and roll to be a little more straightforward and a little less experimental, because I found much of this album bizarre rather than brilliant. The lyrics didn't connect with me, while the polyrhythms, multi-octave vocals and polytonal arrangements felt more exhausting than exciting.

I can understand why some people consider this a masterpiece and an important artistic statement, but after spending time with it I can safely say it isn't for me, and I can't imagine ever wanting to revisit it.

Favourite tracks: "Moonlight on Vermont" was probably the closest thing to a highlight, with some genuinely nice guitar work. "Sweet Sweet Bulbs" also has moments where the musicianship shines through beneath all the chaos.

Least favourite tracks: "Frownland" takes the prize here. It was a very difficult introduction to the album and set the tone for much of what followed.

Album artwork: Love the cover — it's far more appealing than the music inside.

Rated 8/10

I mean, this was, um... It was certainly, uh... Y'know... I don't think it was that bad? You listen to it for long enough and you kind of start to enjoy it

Rated 1/10

One star for the trout. It's long and quite painful.

Favorite songs: Moonlight on Vermont

🐟🫪 The legendary Beefheart album. FAST N' BULBOUS 💡🏃

What's jarring is that the notes are played in different rhythms, which is a far cry from the harmonious chords I'm used. We're hearing the chords deconstructed to their most basic form. It's like the sounds I hear in my day to day life: the conversations, the loud Instagram reels, the engine on the bus. Each has its own rhythm and I think Trout Mask kinda "replicates" that. But most of the time Captain Beefheart and his band are giving elementary music class.

And I mean this positively. There's a kid-like experimentation, a sense of wonder in this record where you just do random crap and see if it sticks. It takes me to being a kid again and not caring about what the world thinks. A masterpiece or a piece of sh-t, it doesn't matter if he's having fun with it. But personally, I'd lean to the latter, I don't think I'll be listening to Trout Mask Replica often. However, it's a much needed escape from that Trinity Session recording I had two weeks ago.

A lot of these polyrhythms remind me of Geese's Getting Killed album but less refined. Later in the record, they get tolerable, but the runtime is just a bit much. For an album with jarring sounds, it follows a conventional structure: songs mixed with tape-recorded conversations as interludes.

Rated 10/10

250 records in and only Pet Sounds has topped this so far. They’re very similar albums in that the depth sonic ideas is overwhelming. You need to lose yourself in it.

In fact I think new listeners probably do get overwhelmed by the length, the number of songs and the density of the instrumentation and dismiss it as weird.

I was lucky in that my introduction was song by song. In the 90’s John Peel would play a song a week on his radio show. I used to edit his shows into mixtapes and songs from Trout Mask Replica became strange interludes from another world amongst the indie and electronica of the era.

When I bought the Capt’s work on cd I preferred his other albums at first. It’s been a slow process over the years to spot the intricacies and now sometimes I’ll be in the mood for Beefheart but not in the right head place for Trout Mask Replica.

So give it thirty years and it’ll grow. If you don’t have time for that listen in chunks (say the four sides of the lp) with breaks in between.

Rated 4/10

An extraordinarily strange and even harsh critics’ favourite. For its unique and uncompromising Anne garde approach it deserves a couple of stars, but nothing more.
