I hate prog. But this was really good.
Nice to have something not from the European and African musical traditions in the list. But this is quite unspectacular though.
Rated 10/10
Although eclipsed by Ocean Rain Crocodiles is a class album especially for a debut. Very accomplished bands like Interpol and Fontaines DC haven’t topped it after several attempts. U2 and Simple Minds ripped it off badly and played stadiums.
Rated 8/10
Expensive production.
Rated 10/10
Fantastic album. Maybe a notch below Leigh and Leif but fantastic nonetheless. Sandy Denny is a beautiful emotive singer and Who Knows Where The Time Goes is the peak of her varied career.
Rated 8/10
Obviously a tremendous personal artistic achievement. One of the great late-life albums. It's clearly in debt, though, to Scott Walker's later albums, yet I reach for those before Black Star every time.
Rated 2/10
History’s worst singer, backed by a band bereft of ideas results in lumpen ponderous arrangements. Singer bellows to compensate. Best avoided.
Rated 8/10
Sheela-na-gig is the peak of PJ’s career. She’ll never top The Peel Session version.
Rated 6/10
His first album was better, heck, the Housemartins were better. It was the sound of the time, but I enjoyed the times more. Not that difficult to create and not that ambitious it’s a bit ordinary 30 years later.
Rated 6/10
I think had I listened to this album at the time and had digested the lyrics this would score higher. Nice beats didn’t pick out a hook.
Rated 2/10
Excruciating vocals exacerbated by bland songs and almost nonexistent music. There are no redeemable qualities on this or any Fleetwood Mac record. What are these zero effort, coked up, charlatans doing on this list?
Rated 6/10
Another 3 star rap album.
Rated 4/10
If you like 60’s folk rock, and I do, this is an ok lp. But it’s not one of the first few thousand lps to hear before. Every Byrds and Buffalo Springfield album is better for a start.
Rated 8/10
Afrofuturism from the past. Neat. Prefer Funkedelic.
Rated 10/10
Listening again after few years I am struck by how great the production flourishes and performances are. Jones and McLagan on this album better their contemporaries. Add Marriott and Lane’s writing the Small Faces had a Premier League line up for 60’s Britain. No wonder this is better than anything the Stones or the Who hade done at this point.
Rated 6/10
Understated but listenable.
Rated 10/10
It was really cool listening to this in yesterday’s heavy London rain. Devoto is one of the great punk era vocalists and here he’s in full paranoid voice.
Rated 4/10
Pretty ordinary with the odd flourish. Woeful vocals.
Solid album. Cool bass and “world music” flourishes. Perhaps of its time.
