Orpheus Listening Challenge 2024: #42 An album preserved in the Library of Congress (49th album)

There's something wrong with this album. No, the mastering is great, the mood it sets is amazing, and the creativity is seeping out of every pore. To mix funk with a spiritual and futuristic aspect and to add jazz influences on top of that is genuine creativity.

But the problem for me is the pacing of it. It feels unrealistically stretched out. Weirdly stretched out even. I enjoy it on a surface level, but it lacks a facet that would leave me wanting to replay it. It gets even weirder because I enjoy a lot of similar projects in the P/F universe, just not this one.

Still a tasteful batch of grooves, mind you, just enigmatically lacking.

Give Up the Funk is a certified classic banger. The others, I didn’t care for.

Rated 8/10

Some real classic funk

Rated 8/10

Just amazed at how much these guys continue to shape our idea of what's cool.

Incredible joint. Though I suppose that it didn't grab me as much as some of the more impassioned reviews on this website, I loved it. To speak plainly, the funk was IN me, controlling the way I moved, thought, and spoke. In a more analytical note, Parliament is obviously one of the most consequential funk acts in the history of the genre, being led by the man himself, George Clinton, who also headed the Parliament sister project, Funkadelic.

Every single song here brings some sort of incredible, undeniable groove that WILL get stuck in your head for around a week. It's impossible not to adore the group vocals of "IF YOU HEEEAR ANY NOISE, IT'S JUST ME AND THE BOYS," or "SWING DOWN, SWEET CHARIOT STOP, AND LET ME RIDE," "GIVE UP THE FUNK!!," "I WANT MY FUNK UNCUT!," I could go on. After having only heard this album for one day, I could tell you the general grooves and vibes coming out of each song. I truly love this album. I will be listening a lot.

DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YESSSSSSSS
REASON: Everyone needs a bit of the funk, and who better to get it from than the masters of it?

Rated 8/10

A lot of funky fun.

Afrofuturism from the past. Neat. Prefer Funkedelic.

What??

Rated 10/10

How much more funky can you get than this album? The answer is none. None more funky.

Rated 6/10

Somehow both groovy and a little boring

Rated 8/10

4.5/5. Fun drinking game: Take a shot every time the word “funk” is said on a parliament or Funkadelic album. You’ll die.

Jokes aside, Mothership Connection is among the best funk albums of all time, this thing is an absolute unstoppable groove machine whether that be the sticky bass/synths of “Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication” or the spoken words over the intro track “P-Funk.” One of those albums that’s impossible to not at least nod your head to.

Day 16

Can you believe the youth of my day is forgetting about Parliament/Funkadelic? That's funked up.

Fav track: Mothership Connection (Star Child)

Funky as hell now where are my sunglasses

Rated 8/10

Groovy baby, nice of good tunes for my wee walk rather

Rated 6/10

So progressive and funky do like it but needs a few listens

Rated 6/10

No está mal, pero la verdad esperaba un poco más.

Good album, even if not really my style. When it comes to funk, I prefer the fusion with rock (as in record by Funkadelic in this same project) than with disco. But, in any case, this is at least 3 or 4 stara (probably, for my personal taste, more in the 3 star range).
