Cathy and Heathcliff were tortured lovers. Misery loves company, and this album invites us to be tortured along with them.

Listen man, a lot of this was good, but I don’t like long Oscar acceptance speeches and the outro lovefest on this album really tried my patience. I wanna drop his rating by an entire star, but that does seem rude to his crew that he wanted to thank.
So my rating will generously be based on the entire album EXCEPT the last 12 minutes, which was so damn annoying since I don’t know those people!

Not bad. I’m about 40 years too old to relate to these lyrics, but I do have some memory of being at that stage🤣. Some of the beats are catchy. I can see how it would be popular but wouldn’t expect it to necessarily have staying power.

This album Is one of the most beautiful creations. It’s been one of my favorites for decades now. The most gorgeous blues guitar work all the way through. Layla gets most of the attention, but Bell Bottom Blues can bring me to my knees. Five stars isn’t enough.

The man has a gorgeous voice, but man his lyrics really lack subtlety. And there is really so little variation of tone across these tracks. Got old fast

I listened to this album so much growing up. I can look at the track list and sing all but the last two songs, just by looking at the titles. Is one hit after another. Classic for a reason. He never topped this one.
4.5 that I’m going to round up to 5 based on the song Vienna.

I’m familiar with Kings of Leon from their singles on the radio. I would not have predicted how much I dislike this album. The vocalist really is not enjoyable to listen to for extended periods! The style/genre of their songs, the sort of bluesy Americana rock is something I would normally gravitate to, but the vocals grated for much of it.

I mean, it’s a vibe. But it doesn’t stray from that vibe for a second. And if they are saying anything profound it is lost on me. It’s not that long of an album and I was getting bored by half way through.

Not an easy listen because the lyrics clearly indicate a person who is suffering. Musically though, it’s not bad. The instruments are tight.
This isn’t the typical three star “meh” album. This is a three star “I’m undecided if I like it or am disturbed by it” rating.

This is great. It didn’t sound like anybody else. I like the rhythms mixed with the rock vibe. Not quite five stars level for me but one I won’t mind coming back to.

Meh. I’m not loving her voice. I predict pelé will love every track or dislike every track- there’s not alot of variety of mood or style on this one.

Didn’t know these guys and the album cover is SCARY. Turns out they play very middle of the road classic-style rock. Not to say they are bad- quite enjoyed some of the tracks. Just that the contrast of the music with that cover art is funny. Some kind of dreamy music actually. I’m pleasantly surprised.

According to Wikipedia this guy is a drummer. So why is he trying to sing? And WHAT are these nonsense lyrics?
There are some instrumental interludes which are interesting. Maybe all instrumental would have been the way to go.
Honestly the only reason I can think that I should have heard this is to know to be grateful for every minute I don’t have to hear it again.

Whoa. This one comes at you aggressively. I was scared! Fortunately it pulls back a bit, and by the second time through I could appreciate the concept. Not an easy listen but I can imagine that this was hugely influential to industrial bands that followed.

On the other hand I saw a reviewer recommend a different album by the same band: Tabula Rasa. Hard to believe it’s the same band! I’m listening now and it’s lovely. The second track is downright peaceful. I wish this were the album chosen for the list, but on the other hand the power of Kollapse is intense and was probably inspirational for many other industrial musicians so I understand why it deserves the place.

Nothing particularly jumps out at me on this. A bit more melodic than some metal. It was not a bad listen but doubt I’ll come back to it.

Rated 8/10

Steely Dan has a very consistent vibe, so I can understand that some people may really not like this. In fact I don’t love all the tracks myself, but there is enough variety of tempo that I found a few tracks in here that I truly enjoy. Peg is the high point for me. But generally I don’t hate any of it and really like some, so overall it’s a success for me.
