DirtAlice in Chains

Rated 10/10

It is about damn time that I get to listen to a 5 star album that appears on here, and it happens to be my favourite grunge album. It is not only their best album but it features Rooster which I consider to be their best song, and I always preferred Alice In Chains over Nirvana. There is so much to love about this album; Like the slow crunchy guitar riffs, the fusion of grunge and heavy metal, the perfect harmonies between Layne Staley (RIP) and Jerry Cantrell, and the raw emotional lyrics that tackle subjects about drugs, depression, mental health and nihilism. This is one of the reasons why I consider the 90s to be the best decade for music. I would argue that only one song feels a little bit like fillery, but the rest of them are absolute bangers. And their two other albums from this period of Alice In Chains are also worth a listen (Facelift and Self Titled)

There's no way I could ever bring myself to dislike elton john. Ok i'ts not my favourite kind of music but I can absolutely agree that he is super talented on piano, has a great voice and is a pretty damn good songwriter. This album might be a little light on the rock aspect, but it still stays upbeat and fun to listen to without going to overly poppy, and it isn't too long either.

Now this album is owned by my parents but I never listened to it, and I quite enjoyed it. it blends elements of new wave and alternative rock but I do see it as having some influence on the industrial movement of the late 80s due to its heavy use of percussion.

I have listened to 13 tales of urban bohemia several times before, but I only vaguely remember some of the songs of this album, and after listening to this album, I really enjoyed it. This is the perfect blend of 60s psychadelia and 90s alternative rock.

I don't mind a few songs of the kinks, but this album had a little too much pop and not enough rock. I was never hugely keen on this decade of music but I can at least agree that the 60s featured a multitude of influential bands that would change the the course of the music industry in the 2nd half of the 20th century and still inspire the music careers of many 21st century bands as well.

Didn't really fancy listening to a deep purple double live album, I find them to be a bit self indulgent in some of their more lengthy tracks. So i decided to listen to Machine Head instead, where the songs are a bit shorter, more snappy and feature plenty of iconic riffs.

Listening to this album I was expecting something closer to hard rock, but the majority of the songs were more closer to a combination of garage rock and rockabilly. There is still an element of shock rock in this album in its relatively early stage though.

OdelayBeck

Rated 8/10

The experimental nature of the album makes it quite an odd one to listen to, featuring a mixture of alt rock, folk and hip hop, which is not a genre I associate with beck. There were a few songs from this album I have heard of before but this is another one of those bands where their singles do not completely represent their music style. the deadpan delivery of the vocals was surprisingly not offputting when listening to this album, and I hope to see other beck albums on here in the future.

Vol 4Black Sabbath

Rated 8/10

This is actually the only classic black sabbath album I had not heard in full, but I have heard a few songs from it. I wouldn't call this their best album but songs like supernaut and snowblind are pretty damn good. Unfortunately there were a couple to tracks that made the album grind to a halt a bit. not going to give it 3 stars though because that would be disrespectful to the late great ozzy osbourne

Not at that keen on this sort of music, but I do kinda appreciate the complexity that is often associated with progressive rock. It does get a bit all over the place due to its jam style sound, but at least it wasn't a long album. Don't really plan on following this band or even this sort of music much further though

I never heard of this band before but I have heard of their lead singer Steven Malkmus, who I remember had one song featured on MTV2 many years ago called Jojo's Jacket, featuring all kinds of random visuals on its music video such as cats playing instruments, some sort of boxing match and a guy running really fast. It was pretty bonkers. There were some odd quirks in this album but nothing particularly memorable. It was a bit of decent indie rock that didn't overstay its welcome though

PearlJanis Joplin

Rated 8/10

Somehow I kinda enjoyed this album, even though I am not all that keen on blues and soul music. Perhaps it is the fact that the vocals reminded me of a lot of other female singers from later rock bands such as Debbie harry, Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde and Lzzy Hale. I feel like they were heavily influenced by Janis Joplin's rough and wide ranged vocal style that would be popular in female fronted rock and metal bands. So there's no way I could bring myself to hate this album.

Janes addiction is one of those bands that shouldn't be judged purely for their singles that get frequently heard on the radio. I only now know that they come up with stuff that gets up close with the funk and alternative metal scene of the late 80s . You pretty much have dave navarro to thank as he is pretty damn talented on guitar. I feel like this is the sort of band that would later inspire 90s alt rock acts such as soundgarden, Rage against the machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I also do see led zeppelin as being a big inspiration for Jane's Addiction's sound and vocals, only with less folk and more funk.

The DoorsThe Doors

I haven't heard this album in a long time but I remember almost every song from it, and I actually enjoyed it more than I expected. The 60s are usually known for its blues-folk-rock scene but this album goes into more psychedelic and art rock. most of the songs have an upbeat sound except for the final 11 minute track, which I still kinda enjoyed due to its more progressive structure.

I used to hate genesis. I would dread every moment that my parents would put a genesis album on since I used to find them very tedious to listen to. Obviously nowadays I have warmed up to prog rock music and so I decided to at least try to listen to a genesis album. And this was the first one that I picked, and I must say it was a good starting choice for exploring their catalogue of music. This entire album kinda feels like one long song that broken up by gradual transitions that feel like its telling a story. Whenever I listen to it, it feels like time just goes by really fast. I wouldn't say there are that many stand out songs, but they do seem to be better to listen to as a full album.

I have always said that Thrash metal is an overrated subgenre of metal, but I can at least agree that Master of Puppets is one of the greatest albums of that type. Although I still prefer Kill em All, Ride the Lightning and Seasons in the Abyss, there are some damn good songs on MoP that have managed to elevate metallica into legendary status in the metal community, maybe even managing to find its place in the music industry as a whole. The songwriting and complex song structures and loose concept about control and oppression do show off an element of progressive rock that most likely was a rare thing to see on heavy metal, although iron maiden at the time had explored these elements in albums like Piece of mind and powerslave. With that said I will still give this album five stars for raising the standards in heavy metal songwriting.

Never heard of this band before but clearly I knew at least three songs of theirs since they get played pretty frequently on the radio. There were some good upbeat tracks on here until the latter half where it mellows out a bit too much, but I did enjoy the album and gave me an appreciation for sons like Its Only Natural and weather With You.

A pretty fun album to listen to. combining punk and rockabilly together and doesn't overstay its welcome throughout its 32 minute runtime. The vocalists sound half a sleep though and the playing sounds very amateurish ,but I guess that is intentional. There is no need for complexity here, just banging a few instruments and mumble the lyrics out and you got yourself a pretty entertaining punk record.
