The roots of rap in the house. You can tell that the style has evolved well by how remedial this early stuff sounds now. The infancy of the Kings of Rock and their simplistic but playful lyricism (“if you say you need a car, well then I’ll buy you two// and if you say, you want a pet, I’ll buy a kangaroo”) and the less than intricate beat breaks, which entertain but fail to enthrall. They were pioneers to be sure, but these songs were best left out on the trails they blazed.

This is just that tasty, tasty good groove that defies genre. Talented musicians that are dialed in with each other to create some amazing tracks. Stronger at the top than towards the end, but still a great album that makes you feel every note.

If a band of talented musicians took a bunch of quaaludes while listening to Pink Floyd and then decided to start recording, this is the result. The first couple of songs are upbeat because the drugs take time to start up, but when they kick in, boy can you feel it.

I’m all for experimenting but this album proves that “you can’t get there from here.” It’s all a lot of oysters and no pearls.

It’s pretty hard to find fault with this benchmark of folk in the late 60s and 70s. It hits on almost every level and, even if this is not your style, you can’t help but appreciate the quality and beauty of the music here.

I found this pretty listenable in spite of all the sonic experimenting that Eno is famous for using. Certainly pretentious but still quite creative and interesting in many places.

This is what you expect from a 75 year old record and it doesn’t disappoint. Clean, soulful energy comes through on all the tracks. No filler on this short window into how it used to be.

The musical equivalent of a neck tattoo … YOU might think it’s cool, but there should have been more than a few people telling you not to do it and you should have listened to them. This is what happens when a great musician is given too much creative control and stops listening to the advice of others.

This is the worst rave I never went to. Why have an album when you have the same song over and over again and, in that song, all you do is repeat the same lyrics over and over again? I get that this is dance music, but that doesn’t mean it has to suck.

Overhyped and overrated album. Interesting things happening instrumentally but the lyrics are terrible, full of juvenile wannabe playboy pimp wordplay via trite rhythmic delivery. Highlights like Thinking About You and Pyramids hold their own, but the rest is lukewarm at best.

A classic moment in time album and still a good listen. This doesn’t merit a 5 with so many cover songs and Cobain’s grating vocals, even if that was his intent. Bonus to hear the in-fighting and the way everyone hates each other!

This album is a Double Dutch champion - skip after skip after skip after skip after skip. It just keeps going. Pop rock gone wrong. Some fun instrumental work saves it from the bottom basement, however.

Derivative BritPop. “No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change” over music stolen from the Stones. Not exactly revolutionary …
