I’m kind of indifferent to this album. It wasn’t bad, maybe it was really cool for 1999, I don’t know. It sounded like pretty boilerplate electronic music to me. There was definitely more iconic electronic albums by the time this came out. I’m just not sure what justifies its inclusion on this list.

Pretty cool. Kein Trink Wasser is the stand out track, that and Are We Here were the most impressive. A lot of the rest was pretty standard fare for the time if not a little more complex.

This felt like a bridge between classic R&B and modern R&B. The live instrumentation gave it a warm feel and the hip hop beats kept it current. Still not my favorite genre, I like old R&B so I appreciated the Smokey cover, but modern R&B doesn’t really excite me. I did enjoy the live band element of the album, some great musicianship on here, but most of the songs were so so.

Ok so, the Spotify link and the YouTube link bring you to two completely different albums. Also, the Wikipedia doesn’t have the album Devotional Songs so no way to know which one is correct. I went YouTube because the playlist was Devotional Songs and Spotify’s was Love & Devotion, which to make it all the more confusing, is what the cover art says on this website. So I have no idea if I listened to the right thing or not.

That being said it was ok. I am not a fan of call and response or group chanted vocals so that really put a damper on things. The main singer has a good voice and the instrumentation, while repetitive, was calming and hypnotic.

I remember renting this cd from the library when I was in high school. I rented a lot of cds from the library when I was in high school. My parents wouldn’t let me do anything with friends on school nights, but I could go to the library. So I would rent 20 cds at a time (and some books) and take them home and discover new music. This was the early days of the internet so it wasn’t as good for finding new music as it is now. Anyways I liked this one enough to rip it to iTunes and This Beard is for Siobhan has been in the rotation ever since then.
Listening to it again, I think it holds up, I believe at the time they were calling this Freak Folk. It doesn’t sound all that freaky to me any more but iirc it was definitely unique at the time.

I think this album contains the first instance of electroswing music ever. I’m not positive but I’ve not heard it on anything prior to this. So it’s definitely ahead of its time in some ways. In other ways it sounds a lot like other stuff from the time.

Some interesting stuff on here. Unique melodies and song structures. I’m not in love with the vocals but they weren’t always terrible. Not something I’d return to but not that bad either.

Not sure how many more Elvis Costello albums are on this list, this was my second and it’s gonna be hard to beat. The first one I had was just ok, but this one has got to be his best.

I get that this was of a time, this was early 90s, so actually these guys were ahead of their time in my opinion. This sounds like late 90s backpack rap, it’s not subtle with its messages, and it’s unabashedly corny. It’s not my favorite thing but I commend them for being true to themselves.

Fantastic album. It’s long but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. And what an opener, it really announces itself and lets you know this isn’t going to be just another alt country album. This is Wilco starting to spread their wings and experiment.

Bad Brains got the new wave treatment on this album. It’s all too clean for me, it’s got that 80s production sheen to it that just doesn’t work for rock music. It’s part of why hair metal is so bad, there’s plenty of reasons, but the glossy production is a big part of it. The songs aren’t bad but they sound bad unfortunately.

Clapton is lucky he’s good at the guitar cause he’s not a good songwriter. He can’t even make a good song when he’s covering other artists.
These songs were all so uninspired and boring, he sounds so soulless like he’s doing this out of obligation.

This is Zep’s weakest album in my opinion. It’s not very cohesive, it’s too long, and many of the songs feel like throwaways. Still some great tunes on here. In My Time of Dying and Wanton Song are standouts, but there’s too much unnecessary filler.

I wasn’t expecting much from a one hit wonder band but this was an excellent album. It’s just a lot of fun, and if you dig in a little bit, the production is stellar. Also, Q-Tip and Bootsy Collins make appearances! If you’re reading this before listening, do yourself a favor and listen with headphones, they play with the stereo sound a lot and it’s best experienced in headphones.
