Chelsea GirlNico

Rated 2/10

This is one of the most dull and flat albums i have ever heard. The whole thing feels overlong and Nico’s vocals sre terrible

The Dandy Warhols just sounded effortlessly cool, especially the singles from this album.
Unfortunately’Boys’, ‘..Last Junkie’ and ‘Every day should be a holiday’ are the standouts, with the rest of yhe album good but never quite reaching the same level.
‘I love you’ borders on annoying, but unfortunately this album sums up the Dandy Warhols for me, so much potential but not quite able to deliver consistently enough to be great.

Indie dance at it’s finest! What’s not to like.
Kinky Afro, Step on and Loose Fit are all classics and sum up the Mondays perfectly. Yes Shaun Ryder isn’t your standard vocalist, but that’s a fair chunk of their charm.

It’s a strange day to have this album as it concludes with me seeing Fatboy Slim playing the park opposite my house.

I’m not a big dance music fan, but what i do like is generally like this. Bordering on hip hop beats.

There’s no denying to hit of the big singles and front loading the album with three means you get off to a great start. I dont mind ‘Fucking in Heaven’ but part of my issue with dance music is the repetitiveness and it does outstay its welcome.

‘Build it up, tear it down’ manages to get the balance better and is just a great feel good tune.

‘Praise you’ with its piano driven opening and stripped back vocal is unmistakable and impossible to hear without picturing Spike Jonzes dance troop. It is such a great track i dont think its possible to fault it.

Lost SoulsDoves

Rated 8/10

The Doves are one of the great underrated bands, who have delivered strong consistent albums throughout their career.

There are elements of Pulp it the fell of some of the songs and there is no mistaking it’s northernness. They combine the dark gritty side with a groove that wont be denied.

Yes this album may lack some of the punch they delivered with ‘The Last Broadcast’ and ‘Some cities’ but it makes up for that with the atmospherics of tracks like ‘ Break me gently’ and ‘Sea Song’.

‘catch the sun’ shows they can also deliver more traditional catchy tunes and stands against any song of this ill. However ’the man who told everything’ is the real star of this album.

Rated 10/10

I loved this album when it was released and i love it now. It is ridiculous to think how old they were at the point they made this.
The singles are great (and plentiful), but there isn’t much drop in standard with the other tracks like ‘lose control’ and ‘I’d give you anything’.

Rated 2/10

From the dated drum sound to the dated vocals, this album is a slog. I dont mind the strings on the occasional tracks but overall this is just eighties pup.

Signing OffUB40

Rated 4/10

It was a nice sunny day when i listened to this which helped it i feel.
I generally found it enjoyable in parts, but the songs just go on too long and font really feel like they go anywhere.

The music is laid back funk and Badu delivers jazzesque neo soul vocals, what’s not to like. I prefer Baduizm, but there’s enough here to enjoy.

‘Kiss my neck’ goes on a bit too long, but i like the more acoustic feel of ‘A.D 2000’ which works well as a counter balance.

WhateverAimee Mann

Rated 4/10

I much prefer her more recent work and certainly post Magnolia soundtrack.

This all just feels a bit run of the mill 90s rock that would feature in the back of some romantic drama.

Tom Waits is such a great storyteller and the faux live diner setting works well, allowing him to introduce stories a bit more.

Overall it’s a good album, but not as good as Rain Dogs

I approached this album with trepidation, which was immediately confirmed by the medieval/baroque noodling to open. This is followed by football chant drums and dated hair rock. This process is rapidly changing my opinion of the appearance of a saxophone, which i generally saw as a positive thing…. Not anymore.

From here it is just dull dated sounded drivel of the highest (or lowest?) order

This was a nice relaxing accompaniment to a July morning walk to work.
In particular ‘Sweet Thing’ is a work of beauty and this is continued through’Cypress Avenue’

As the album goes on Van’s habit of just repeating the same bit multiple times starts to register more (as does his ability to end a song….repeat to fade) and prevents this from being a truly great album.

Overall though this is an enjoyable listen and certainly worthy of its place on lists like this.

Rain DogsTom Waits

Rated 8/10

There’s something theatrical about a lot of Tom Waits songs and certainly the first three tracks here put me in mind of a good Disney soundtrack.

This process has made appreciate the gruff mouth full of gravel delivery, which just complements these songs perfectly. If anything it’s a bit too long in the mix on ‘Jockey full of bourbon’

I loved Rocket From The Crypt and was delighted to get this other work from john Reiss.

It is flat out garage noise with vocals that are little more than a squark, but i really enjoyed it!

I could have done without the first 20 seconds of ‘Super Unison’ but i really enjoyed the contrast that occurs throughout this song as it blend ms into something more reflective.

The more laid back side is carried into ‘New Intro’ a more relaxed instrumental that has me worrying that the energy of the earlier album has gone but ‘new math’ quickly allays that fear.

Strangely my main issue with this album is that the tracks felt too long at times. The style suits something a bit punchier and shorter
