Rain DogsTom Waits

Rated 8/10

I don’t know, man. It sounds like the score to a Ronald Dahl movie. Somehow I mean that as a compliment.

As I get ever closer to my 1,000th album, this project has become more about the albums and bands that *aren't* on the list. Not a single Primus album, but there are 265 albums from the 1970s so far, the vast majority of them I could have died happy -- happier, even -- having not listened to.

This is one of the albums that I would have been happier had I died not listening to it. Goddamn you, Robert Dimery, you took that from me.

GooSonic Youth

Rated 4/10

I’ve given each of the other FOUR Sonic Youth albums on this project three stars. I feel that they deserved those stars. Decent albums, some good songs, some bad, mostly mediocre but listenable albums.

This album sucks. Five mediocre Sonic Youth albums, but not a single album from bands like Deftones, They Might be Giants, Salt N Pepa, Neutral Milk Hotel, Tool, Madvillian, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tyler, The Creator, J. Cole, Death Grips, Childish Gambino, Mos Def, Black Star, Danny Brown, MF DOOM…the list goes on and on.

But at least there are five mediocre Sonic Youth albums, Six Beatles albums that sound exactly the same, and NINE David Bowie albums. So there’s that.

There are people that don’t like Radiohead, and I accept that. I don’t understand it, but I accept it.

I just feel so badly for those people, though, you know?

Another surprisingly excellent album. The first half resonated with me much more, and I think it kind of devolved I to the type of shininess that I was afraid of when this popped up. Still, the first half of the album was so shockingly good, I’m giving it 4 stars.

Man, I cannot stand the Beatles. I cannot stand how people continue to act like they’re the pinnacle of music.

But I’ll be goddamned if they don’t have the occasional banger, and In My Life is one of them. This album was a slog of mediocre sameness, and then they hit you with this masterpiece. It’s outrageous, really.

Anyway, In My Life gets a full star all on its own.

Shockingly bad. I feel like I owe The Rolling Stones an apology. They are no longer the worst rock band to have multiple albums on this list.

It occurs to me that reggae is like jazz in that you can tell what it is pretty clearly, but is it any good? Because it all sounds (Bob Marley excepted) pretty much the same.

This was ok. It was definitely reggae. Was it *good* reggae? Who can tell? Not me. Not me.

Three albums in 14 months is crazy enough, and all of them hitting such heights is mind-blowing — but honestly this is the worst of the bunch. There are a few good songs on this album, but it feel disjointed and meandering in a weird way. Like it doesn’t know what kind of album it wants to be.

What's interesting is that I got a Public Image Ltd. album yesterday, which the internet tells me is Post-Punk. Then I get this today, which the internet tells me is Post-Punk, and the two albums are not the same. This is...OK, I guess? Not very compelling, but not bad enough to give 2 stars. More like 2.5. The vocals are very bad and stupid, just a sleepy-sounding guy ramble talking over the music. No voice modulation, not really on any kind of beat, just sort of talking.

OK, I'm just going to rate it now before I talk myself into a 2 star

This is another one of those rare albums that make me remember the power of this project, and the reason I started it in the first place. This is a band that I had not heard before (though I'm fairly certain I've heard of them), in a genre I don't much care for, and I am blown away. This album must be the forefather of so many bands that came after. I don't think it's quite a 5 star for me, but man, it is an excellent album, and an excellent inclusion into this project.

It’s really interesting. The music is weird, but peppy, the vocals aren’t very good, but they somehow match, the genre is indiscernible, but it somehow works — and it is so utterly different from anything else in the 70s you have to wonder how it was ever even conceived.

Kid ARadiohead

Rated 10/10

As I creep up on 1,000 albums, I find myself feeling more and more like this project is a slog. I approach the website every day with trepidation, wondering which bullshit 50+ year old album I'll have to listen to today.

But sometimes, all is right in the world.

Today is one of those days. Kid A is glorious. It's different, it's influential, it's revolutionary, it's engaging, it's brilliant, it's beautiful. There will be people who don't like this album, and I understand, but those people are wrong. To say that this is one of the best albums of all time is a gross understatement.

Like most 90s Hip Hop, it feels dated, but comfortably so. Rap has changed a lot in the last 30 years, and Hip Hop is nothing if not a time capsule. So even though it definitely sounds its age, it's still damned good for what it is. Could I see myself getting the urge to pop this on in my car on a random Tuesday? Not really, but I'm quite glad it popped up on the list today.

This project is so goddamned weird, man. Even when it gets it right, it gets it wrong. Does this album deserve to be here? Probably. But Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, and Lullabies to Paralyze are the better albums - and they're nowhere to be found. Not including Songs for the Deaf is a particularly egregious omission, as that album is arguably their magnum opus.

This is a 4 star album, and an excellent debut for a band that went on to be amongst the biggest and best bands of the 2000s. I'm just flabbergasted as to how anyone could listen to the discography of QotSA, and choose this album over classics where the band really hit their stride.

New WaveThe Auteurs

Rated 4/10

It’s not terrible…it’s fucking terrible. Why did I need to listen to this before I died? I’ve never wished I died young before, but here we are.

This is so much better than I expected. I don't really like punk, and I don't really like 70s rock, but this was surprisingly excellent. 3.5 stars but getting a half bump for not being another 70s hippie rock bullshit album.
