Probably my favorite of his so far. Pop first half that gradually transitions into more mellow. Don't really understand what makes him special but I guess it must be something technical that eludes me

I really liked this and wasn't expecting to. How is this the only album to come out of this era not sounding like it was recorded under water? Lots of the best sounds of the early 80's without the pretense. Or maybe too much. I don't know. I'd listen to this again

Completely unremarkable? Just listened to it and couldn't tell you a single thing about it. Clearly a band that defined 80's hair metal.

I've heard a few of his songs and saw the movie and couldn't really figure out how he never broke through to the us but listening to this album it is painfully clear. He is soooooo British. He clearly did not want to break through. He had zero interest in American culture and that's fine. He's British. But man. It feels so corny coming from am American.
Rated 6/10
Has a decent groove. Bit tedious though.

I will never understand why anyone would willingly listen to a drunk and constipated cookie monster stumbling over an easy listening Radio station. Time is the only thing I would consider a 1 everything else is worse.

I always assumed they were green day adjacent not sonic youth adjacent. Not that I particularly like either genres so I guess its a lateral move? After listening to all these 80's college rock albums and post punk I find it fascinating that the alternative scene spent 10 years dissecting a pop rock album only for their sound to be polished back to a perfect pop song culminating with smells like teen spirit. And now there isn't really an avant garde there's just different flavors of music. I don't know if that's good or bad. This album is definitely bad though.

The shorter the song the better it is on this album. I think he realized that after this album. Unfortunately I had to listen to this one. I wanna be your dog is great.

I am definitely reading too much into this album and can't seem to articulate it. There is a subversive pop element to this thing that is played completely straight. And I think that is what Andy warhol saw in her. The album is completely unhinged in the most normal way possible. Besides the fact that clearly everyone who had any involvement with it was so blitzed on drugs. Perfectly deranged.

Smart person's red hot chili peppers? I stick by my theory that the late 80's had some weird dead ends going on musically.
Rated 6/10
Every late 60's cliche. I had to make sure this wasn't some weird super group. Guess the sound had to come from somewhere. It was listenable.
Rated 4/10
For how terrible the albums seem to be in the late 80's on here this isn't bad. Still not great though. Folk u2? Speaking of why are the Irish around this time obsessed with the American west?
Rated 6/10
Industrial joy division? I'm pretty sure I've been to a club that played this.

For how much I hate this list every so often i get an excuse to listen to an album I've been meaning to listen to. This confirms that I don't like this band. It is so claustrophobic and insular. I feel like it revels in the uncomfortable and the path to destruction but in such a padded one step removed sort of way. They do a very good job of creating that feeling but even in my most depressed state this feels too nihilistic for me. Well done just really not for me

That brings me back to a time and place. Do I want to be there? Probably not.

This is so primitive looking back from 2026. I could do this in garage band in an afternoon. For 1992 (and possibly earlier) this is a great start to portishead to boards of Canada which I think hadn't produced an album yet? Also, I feel like for how seminal this is, I don't recognize any songs. I know him from later weirder stuff. But this is just there...

Oh no. Is my music taste is dated! Do I listen to my generations post punk?
I'm pretty sure the band would agree with me though. This album is a snapshot of the music of that time and place, but man. It sounds so dated now. I will say their other albums feel much more timeless but obviously this is the one with the singles. Love the band, album didn't age well

Ugh. I like Rufus wainwright.

Wow this album is all over the place. It .makes sense that she pivoted after this because it feels like the end of her teeny-pop persona. I think the song like a prayer is that next evolution but the rest of the album didn't get that message. Also some of these songs I haven't heard the original in ages only remixes. Cherish is so hokey. Love you Madonna, but man outside of the singles you are phoning this in.

One of the best eps I've ever heard stretched way too long into an LP. There just isn't enough content here for how long this album is. But when this hits it's incredible. Plus I used to look like him in my early 20's.
