NixonLambchop

Rated 6/10

Streaming services have recommended Lambchop to me before. I’ve listened to a couple songs and they’re alright. I never really listened to a full album and really didn’t need to. I have no idea why this is included on the list over other indie stuff

The kind of album that makes you want to steal a car, get in it and drive west, play the album full blast. When it ends, get out, get into a fight. Then get back into the car, come to town, and the enter the most prestigious hotel of all time: Morrison Hotel

I’m not exactly the one to determine it, but a Scottish man with Ghanaian roots singing reggae in a fake Jamaican accent feels like some sort of cultural appropriation

Yes Kid Rock is a terrible person, but have you also considered that he’s a terrible musician? You probably have because of course his music is terrible

The Smiths were a band I tried to get into in high school, but they never fully clicked for me. Sad white boy music was very much my jam, but something about them kept them from really connecting to me. It might be Morrisey’s singing. I like all sorts of singers but even now his voice just doesn’t do it for me. That said, listening to this album now I mostly enjoyed it. Maybe I had low expectations this time and better knew what I was getting into. Funnily enough, Apple music autoplayed an Elliott Smith song after this album ended and that is exactly the type of sad white boy music that I do really love

DryPJ Harvey

Rated 8/10

I really should listen to more PJ Harvey. Both albums of her that I’ve gotten for the list have been good. Basically more of the 90s alt rock that I already love plenty of

The Yes AlbumYes

Rated 4/10

There are snippets on this album where you can hear that Yes seemingly has the ability to make good songs. However, these are only about 30 seconds long in a 9 minute long song, so then you’re stuck with 8.5 minutes of a bad song. Sure they seem pretty technically competent on all their instruments, but like that all still has to work together and build toward something interesting and good for the music to be good

FrankAmy Winehouse

Rated 6/10

I can understand why someone would really like Amy Winehouse’s music, but it just doesn’t quite do it for me. She’s a good singer, but the actual music is just ok

I honestly always thought the Human League were a one hit wonder. This album is mostly fine but Don’t You Want Me easily clears every other song

Ya Elvis was a weirdo and kinda corny and his life went to shit, but this first album really does help sell why he was as big as he was at the time

There are moments in this where I almost get it. I can almost understand why people like Taylor Swift. It’s kind of pleasant sounding and moves along nicely. But if I give it even half a thought, then that goes away. It almost instantly becomes grating. The lyrics sound like they come from a high school girl’s diary. The music truly is bland and gives you nothing. I had to skip most songs after like 30 seconds because I just couldn’t do it

Sometimes on vet shows they have to castrate farm animals by putting an extremely tight band around their testicles. The lead singer of the Darkness sings like he has one of those bands on him

BostonBoston

Rated 6/10

Yeah sure whatever, but why are all of Boston’s album covers like UFO themed? Their music has nothing sci fi about it. Their name is literally just Boston

Femi KutiFemi Kuti

Rated 6/10

Definitely prefer Fela Kuti’s music. There is some fun funk here, but I don’t think every funk song needs to be 8-9 minutes long

The kind of album that makes going through this list feel worthwhile. Yes I’ve the band backing Paul Simon on Graceland but I never would’ve thought to listen to a whole album of theirs

Based on the other reviews and descriptions, I thought I was going to hate this. But it’s actually quite good. Some great storytelling through songs with a bit of a melancholic streak. Very 70s singer-songwriter in the best way
