Of the two albums I got this week with Peter Gabriel on them, this one is certainly umm… the longer one? There is a world of difference between this and what he was doing later in his career and thank god he changed

This is another case where I feel way out of touch with most other reviewers. The average score almost puts it in the bottom of albums on this site, but I thought it was downright delightful. The description saying they combined country and punk definitely feels misleading though. It more so sounds like new wave with the occasional fiddle thrown in. Some of the vocals and production reminded me of The The, another great discovery I’ve had from this list

StankoniaOutKast

Rated 8/10

Outkast have some of the most fun rap ever. They’re just doing silly stuff while also somehow some of the best rappers ever

Tom Waits’s last “normal” album before fully going out there with Swordfishtrombone. It does show signs of some of the more experimental features he would play with, but it’s still tied strongly to more blues and jazz. It’s Waits so it’s great regardless

Eric Clapton is a pretty good guitar player and can do the blues well. Unfortunately this album doesn’t lean into any of his strengths and has way too many slower songs that don’t really work for him

Love Dolly as a person. She’s a true icon. Unfortunately outside of Jolene and maybe 9 to 5, I really only think of her music as fine at best. I don’t generally care for country and her stuff doesn’t really stand out compared to a lot of other stuff

Weird I got two thrash metal albums back to back, but I vastly preferred the Anthrax album to this one. This felt incredibly repetitive and got boring quick

I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. Metal isn’t a genre I generally gravitate towards but occasionally I can get it. And this album was decent and kind of fun. Also there was a song about Judge Dredd that I never would’ve expected, so that was a fun surprise

MottMott the Hoople

Rated 6/10

I’ve never listened to Mott the Hoople outside of All the Young Dudes, and it’s ok. I have a feeling if David Bowie wrote and produced this whole album it would’ve been great

I actually enjoy this more than Rocking in the Free World. It represents the best of Neil Young’s “grunge” era. And ya, it’s a Neil Young album so I’m giving it 5 stars

Superstition is great and the rest of the album pales in comparison. Honestly the rest of the album pales in comparison to Stevie Wonder’s other great albums. Like it’s still good and listenable but I don’t know why anyone would listen to this over some of his others

This is my favorite Davis album. It manages to be so experimental but still sounds so pleasant and playful. It’s an album you can just as easily fall asleep to as listen deeply and feel every note

This album is ok. It sits firmly in that early 2000s rock era, but if you compare it to any other band from the same era, like the Strokes, White Stripes, or Black Keys; it just doesn’t stand up

Jack White is the kind of weird little gremlin person you can’t picture doing anything other than making music, so it’s a good thing that he’s pretty great at it

DocumentR.E.M.

Rated 10/10

You could pick any early REM album and it’d be a worthy pick for this list. There’s no wrong answer. Document has some of their earliest really catchy songs and is quite fun despite some more serious lyrics at time
