When David Bowie pulled out of T in the Park in 2004, The Bees were my choice to see headline the Saturday ahead of Ocean Colour Scene, Muse and The Darkness. Probably got it right. Although basement jaxx were also a contender.

There's probably an essay on how 'in character' all the misogyny and hate there is in this record compares with the murder ballads of Nick Cave and the outlaws of Bruce Springsteen and older country music stars, and how when that kind of writing is intepreted through a hip hop lens it tends to be received in a more dismissive way than those other (more respected?) artists. But I can't be bothered to write it, or to Google if it has been written by someone more invested in the subject.

Anyway, an undeniably great rap style, genuine wit and some impressive production. Although, I would be ashamed to listen to much of it in company in 2026, which I guess says a lot.

Never really engaged with LL Cool J as a rapper (he's always been more of a 'celebrity' figure to me). But you know what? He's pretty tight. A solid 90s rap album.

If you're going to be a strummy, strummy band without much musical invention or skill, then you had better have an amazing singer with compelling lyrics. Evan Dando doesn't really hit either mark. A fine 90s rock album, but there are loads of those.

Nice enough in the background, but no bangers like Iceblink Luck or Heaven or Las Vegas to lift me from the ethereal gloom and gaine my full attention.
