Took a while to get into it. Then I realised I needed to listen to it loud. Will try listening while wearing black eyeliner as the next stage to push it up to a 5.

Lot to like here (Flutes especially). But probably not in the top three of Hot Chip albums I'd choose for this list

Really like the cover and the title. Do not like what I'm hearing though. Feels like a proper sledgehammer of all the things I find unappealing about 80s music.

"So drunk in the August sun
And you're the kind of girl I like
Because you're empty, and I'm empty
And you can never quarantine the past"

Will take the reflective melancholy of Malkmus over the nihilism of Cobain any day.

Imagine writing a diss track against Paul McCartney when this is the best you've got to offer. A tedious, boring record for the most part

The Bottle was a big part of my dissertation. Great, important, influential song. Album gets a bit meandering, but everything remains honest and interesting and purposeful. Wish I had more time to listen to these outside work.

Strong memories of driving down to Wales as a 13-year-old and listening to this cassette on my walkman in the back seat while my dad listened to Radio 2 on the car stereo. Bleak holiday times.

Some very skilled rapping. And probably the very first hip hop album I truly go into. Hard listen now though. Can't really justify such intense homophobia and violence against women, even it's it all in this purposefully offensive persona. Very first couple of seasons of South Park.
