I gave Stankonia 4 stars. At 1 hr 13 minutes it’s a lot. But it’s worth the investment of your time.

This is a full hour longer. Its highs are not as high. Its lows are lower. And did I mention it’s a full hour longer.

You do not need to hear this before you die.

Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind

Never listened to an album by The Police. Mainly because Every Breath You Take and Roxanne just never did it for me.

Glad I’ve now listened to this. I can see why it’s iconic even if it’s not something I’d actively seek out.

I’m sorry but nobody *must* hear 72 minutes of a man 25 year past his prime going through the motions, churning out watered-down cliché-filled versions of his old songs.

MottMott the Hoople

Rated 4/10

The Mott the Hoople album prior to this one has two excellent songs. Written by Lou Reed and David Bowie respectively.

On this one they make the fatal mistake of writing theirown material in the style of the people who made them famous but without a shred of the talent.

Sounds like a support act at every gig I’ve been to.

Pairing notes: best enjoyed standing up whilst drinking beer out of a plastic cup. Be sure to politely but unenthusiastically clap after each song and wait for some better music to come on.

Kanye before he discovered Nitrous Oxide and Swastikas.

The most accessible Joni album.

This is the one that made me buy physical copies of her entire discography a couple of years ago… completely unaware how experimental she got.

The first 6 songs are arguably the best ‘Sad Dad’ songs ever written. They’re easily 5 star.

The back half is a drag at times but on the strength of those first 6 I can’t give lower than 4 stars.

“Yeah so I drank a bottle of gin and battered my girlfriend. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect whilst in jail and listen... I’m not saying I definitely won’t do it any again but I’ll at least leave a little gap before i do”

- Ray Price on ‘Sittin & Thinkin’, 1963.

My dad played this album every Sunday evening for about 10 years when I was growing up.

This now triggers an anxiety response where I feel like I’m going to school in the morning.

1 star for being the first album on the list to make me feel physically sick.
