Wow, first time being this positively surprised by an album from here in a while. I love the sort of goofy punky attitude on here. It has the classic Punky stuff mixed with some seeming early 60's R&B grooves. There's a lot of other quirky stuff and touches in here that I just really enjoy as well. It's brimming with creativity like a lot of records seemingly aren't able to do, even good ones.

I never had a physical copy of this album but I did listen to the shit out of this when I downloaded this as an MP3. I ended up going through a riot grrrl phase directly because of this album, sometime around 2001, of course well after that scene had all but ended. Still, I remember this time in my life fondly and this album dernière formed part of that soundtrack

Deceptacon is great and then it’s annoying
Rated 8/10
Pretty decent record all in all.

I felt like I was eavesdropping on a college volleyball team’s locker room at midnight drinking after winning a game, which is basically what it is. This album is so bad that it actually works. That’s one way of saying that I would rather listen to this than any Elvis Costello, Kings Of Leon, or Dexy’s Midnight Runners album.

Enjoyed this a lot. Fun tracks that don't outstay their welcome, and I liked when that one exploded at the end hehe

Find of the list so far, I knew Bikini Kill but not this later band.
EDIT 70 albums later. Bought the vinyl. ANd Deceptacon has cropped up everywhere including being covered by Irish band Sprints when I saw them live (great bank check them out). I've added a star.

I like the general musical direction of the album and feel I would be able to get into this if it wasn't executed so badly. It sounds amateurish but not in a charming way.
The tracks go all kinds of places but those are neither nice nor interesting. And some of the shout-singing is so annoying.
"Slideshow at Free University" was okay I guess.
1.5/5 - weak

I think deceptacon (and another of theirs, “mediocrity rules”) is a great song. The rest of the album is just ok.

Wonderfully hyper-literate creative and cool lady punk. Where has this record been my whole life?
Rated 10/10
First impressions... this is what you would get if you put X Ray Spex and Joy Division In a blender. Quirky and individual. Really enjoyed this. 3 times so far!
Rated 8/10
First Half: Wooo those hooks are infectious. The line between really good and gimmick.novelty with Riot grrrl is really really thin. This album blows that line away and shreds with it. Infectious indie, infectious riot grrrl punk, infectious pop
Second Half…sigh, at least it’s creative.

Spiky. And angry. Quite probably rightly so

Not for me
Rated 4/10
On paper, I should probably love this; I like a lot of Riot Grrl era bands and artists and have always enjoyed female-fronted punk and indie bands (although my favourite era for these groups is the 70s and 80s). This record however I didn't particularly enjoy. The vocals (particularly the backing/supporting vocals) started irrating me and the music was pretty basic and uncreative for large parts. Reminded me of Beat Happening. like bratty, snotty bands with attitude but this one just did not land at all. Baffled by it's inclusion on the list.
Edit: just looked at the critical reception of when this was released and clearly I'm in the minority here.

I think the first two thirds of this album are fantastic. They do a good job blending electronic and punk elements. The last couple songs are weaker and hold this back for me. The vocals and lyrics are great and bring the energy you would want on something like this. Favorites were Deceptacon, The The Empty, Eau D’ Bedroom Dancing, and My My Metrocard.

Nevermind the twenty years in between, this feels like a direct spiritual successor to X-Ray Spex, and I'm immediately in! It just needs a little saxophone to really push it over the top for me. Why did we surrender all of our brass and woodwinds to Ska?
ANYWHO. What an album. I had a few of these tracks on a larger playlist already, but I'll be adding more and checking out the rest of Le Tigre's catalog.

Really enjoyed it without it having that absolute stand out banger to get the extra star
