MetallicaMetallica

Rated 2/10

Some people call the black album the last truly great Metallica album. It isn’t. It’s their first embarrassing one and it only gets worse from here on in their discography.

I’d put the average age of a fan of this album at 14.
These guys were nearing 30 when they put this out.

After a couple of days of travelling without sleep I am sleep deprived to the point of feeling drunk.

I’ve listened to this before but today it just clicked.

Every bit as good as Rain Dogs.

Been a long time since I listened to this one and it isn’t quite as good as I remembered. Some really great songs and a fair few skips too.

Some people call ABBA or Britney or Spice Girls their guilty pleasure.

I don’t get that. Why be guilty for liking music you like? Who are the arbitrators of taste to decide what you should feel guilty for?

In saying that, I feel pretty guilty about liking this one… you know on account of the creator being a nazi and all.

Each AC/DC song is equivalent of drinking 2 pints.

Title track (pints 1 and 2) i was in a great mood.
By the end of track 3 (pint 6) I’d had my fill. That was a fun session but I’m ready to call it a night.

Track 4… literally called ‘touch too much’. Appropriately named.

Track 10. Aka Pint 20. Nobody needs this. We’re in stomach pump territory.

Listened to this on the way to Majorca. Pretty confident it’s going to be my soundtrack to the holiday.

Is this a stonewall must-hear classic I’d insist everyone hears? Probably not.

Did I absolutely love it and know I’ll be back for more? Absolutely.

Goes to show how music is so influenced by personal context.

21Adele

Rated 2/10

Count Binface wants to nationalise Adele.
Hopefully that means she’s a bit less shit in 2027.

In some god forsaken alternate reality, Thom yorke’s post-Bends-anxiety gets the better of him. Instead of writing OK Computer he quits Radiohead and takes a job singing West End musicals with atrocious lyrics.

I tried to dance to Britney Spears / I guess I’m getting on in years / My phones on vibrate for you / god knows what all these new drugs do.

I mean jesus fucking Christ.

Imagine if Ed Sheeran just strolled into a high security prison to play a show to the inmates.

Imagine he sang a new song he wrote literally the night before in front of tv cameras (then flipped the bird to the cameras).

Imagine that song was criticising the entire prison system and calling for reform.

Imagine the inmates cheered so much he played it again.

Ed Sheeran. He’s sure as shit no Johnny Cash.

A strange album with some excellent and some questionable songs. The strength of the final 3 tracks alone warrants 4 stars.

‘What’s the best album ever?’
-Such a complex question and almost impossible to answer…. Do we mean most individually brilliant songs? Album as a coherent piece of art? The one I come back to most? The most universally loved? most influential to me personally? most influential to music itself? The one that moves me the most emotionally? The best musicianship? To be honest my answer probably changes by season, different stages of my life, my emotional state… I’d pick something different for a long drive vs late at night. How do you even compare a great jazz record to a great folk album, to legendary hip hop, to indie rock?
