I have never liked her voice. And 77 minutes of her whining just gets draining. I did quite like Dirrty because the Redman feature was entertaining.

This is pretty cool. Classic punk rock sound with added saxophone filling the gaps that would often be filled with lead guitar. The energy is really good here. Favorite songs were Warrior In Woolworths, I Can’t Do Anything, Plastic Bag, and The Day The World Turned Day-Glo.

I think 20 dollars in Kohl’s Cash just appeared in one of my jacket pockets. I didn’t realize this was the best selling album of the 21st century and second place is behind by 4 million copies. It’s hard not to see why. These songs were, and still are, everywhere. The hits are still really great and the deep cuts (if you can even call them that) are pretty great too. I also forgot she did a Cure cover. Never been a fan of Someone Like You.

I get super excited whenever I see that something from here is Brazilian. The Brazilian music I have been exposed to from here is some of the most interesting new discoveries. This is no exception. This album is really great. Super interesting usage of sound and many different textures. It’s very reminiscent of the late 60’s - early 70’s Beach Boys. Favorite songs were A Minha Menina, Baby, Bat Macumba, Trem Fantasma, and Tempo No Tempo.

Had to run a sanity check here and relisten to all three Joni albums we have had so far. Can confirm, my scores for the other two stand, and she really cooked here. Just the whole second half of this album is great song after great song. The instrumentals are subtle yet effective at letting her vocals and songwriting shine. I understand it now. I wanted to be contrarian on this one and I just can’t. This album is really great.
Holy fuck! This blew my mind. Absolute assault on the senses. So who’s forming the wall of death during the John Zorn concert with me? Perfectly controlled chaos.

Every time a new song started I thought to myself “this is a cool idea” and then they repeated that same idea for 6 minutes. This formula went on for 74 minutes. I wanted to like this, I didn’t. Favorite song was Wait A Minute/Praying For A Jeepbeat.

An album and a band I had never heard of. This is like if Damon Albarn was in The Flaming Lips. It’s like Ween that I could play in the car with my mom (okay maybe it’s not THAT good). So glad I could hear this though. The songs bend genres while maintaining accessible melodies. It loses a point because it’s not the most original thing out there, but it is very well executed. Favorite songs were Rings Around The World, Receptacle For The Respectable, No Sympathy, and Run! Christian, Run!

This album and El Camino went triple platinum on my iPod in elementary and middle school. Now that some time has passed I can see that it is kinda just “we have the White Stripes at home”, but that’s not a bad thing. The songs are still solid. Favorites were Everlasting Light, Tighten Up, Howlin’ For You, and Ten Cent Pistol.

I read “psychedelic funk” and got excited as those are both genres I like. I did not like this. It felt significantly worse than Pills n Thrills. The vocals are just absolutely buried here. Fat Lady Wrestlers and Lazyitis were good enough to save this from a 1.
Uh let me be clear, the streets are saying this is maybe the whitest album ever and I am struggling to find a convincing argument against that. However, I am white, so this album is great. Very much of the same styling as Blood Sweat and Tears. The latter half of this has a bluesier edge that I think pushes it above future Chicago material that got softer. The end of South California Purples features a very similar riff to Behind The Wall Of Sleep by Black Sabbath. The main thing holding this album back is it is a little long, but making your debut a double LP is ballsy. Favorite songs were Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?, Questions 67 And 68, South California Purples, and Liberation
Rated 8/10
Lot of funky beats here that make the whole thing seem pretty cool. Good usage of a variety of samples. Fun time overall. Favorites were Feelin’ Alright, Good Newz Comin’, J Beez Comin’ Through, and Doin’ Our Own Dang.

When I was in high school cross country every invitational meet there would be these dudes who would warm up carrying a boombox on their shoulders and the only songs they would ever play were Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue and Enter Sandman. Anyway, this album is solid. It’s not their best work, but the singles are really good. Why does Don’t Tread On Me use the melody from America from West Side Story? Favorite songs were Enter Sandman, Sad But True, and Nothing Else Matters.
Rated 4/10
Just play this entire album over that video of those two black guys dancing on roller skates. This album has not aged well. Yet, of the three albums by this group I have been subjected to it is somehow my favorite. Being more positive and poppy still couldn’t save this from being boring. Favorite song was Yesterday When I Was Mad.
Rated 8/10
Of all the PJ Harvey albums the generator had thrown at me this is pretty easily my favorite. The first half is good, but the second half just turns it up to another level that just has this really manic and raw energy. Any album that features a Highway 61 Revisited cover is also appreciated. Favorite songs were Rid Of Me, Rub Til It Bleeds, Highway 61 Revisited, 50ft Queenie, and Me-Jane.
Rated 8/10
I love me some Reggae. Bob and his crew just create an immaculate vibe while incorporating some important themes. Music about revolutions I can listen to while lounging on the beach. Favorite songs were Lively Up Yourself, No Woman No Cry, Rebel Music, and Revolution.
Rated 6/10
This album is pretty cool. It takes the familiarities of blues and applies them in an African context. This doesn’t really do anything new, but I didn’t think it really has to. It’s a fun time. Favorites were Soubour, Al Hassidi Terei, and Nick.
Rated 4/10
I’ve tried on multiple occasions to get into FKA Twigs’ music, but I just haven’t been successful. Maybe it’s just not for me. This sounds like the background music used in fragrance commercials. I liked Two Weeks, but could probably leave most of this.
Rated 8/10
This is an absolute behemoth. I had to listen to the whole thing three times to really digest it. I have to pose the question I ask of every rock opera: “Is it as good as Quadrophenia?” I would have to answer no here. This definitely has highlights, but sometimes the story gets a little lost in the instrumental passages, especially in the second half. Also was there a reason the main character was half Puerto Rican? Like was Peter just feeling it one day? I really liked the album, but I don’t think it is as good of a full package as Selling England and doesn’t quite reach the same heights as Foxtrot. Favorite songs were The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, In The Cage, Counting Out Time, The Carpet Crawlers, Lilywhite Lilith, The Lamia, and It.
Rated 6/10
This was a pleasant surprise. Fun punky album that reminds me of Pink Flag. Maintains that 90’s alt-rock style while using its influences well. Songs don’t outstay their welcome. The real instrumental highlight here is for sure the bass. These lines are sufficiently chunky and make excellent backdrops. Favorite songs were Line Up, Connection, Smile, Waking Up, and Stutter.
