This album is basic. In a good way.

Imagine if these pop metal lyrics were placed over King Crimson instrumentals, it would sound wrong, this album is pop rock and i love it.

Every person who comes to this album will immediately love the hits. It is impossible to reject Livin' On A Prayer or Wanted Dead Or Alive.

Many underrated songs on here, Let It Rock, I'd Die For You, & Raise Your Hands are all great heavy rockers.

Rec from RocknRollfan on AOTY.

NEED TO HEAR RATING: DEFINITELY HEAR

Best song: Livin' On A Prayer
Worst song: Social Disease
Underrated: Wild In The Streets

I don’t like Bon Jovi. Saying that, whenever I hear You Give Love A Bad Name I always think it’s quite good at the start but can’t stand it by the end. I think it’s just the intro I like.

The only song of theirs I do enjoy is Wanted Dead Or Alive which is why this isn’t getting a one star. There’s mo more from them on the list so pretty much a guarantee I won’t ever listen to an album of theirs again.

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi is exactly the sort of album I normally struggle with. I've always thought Bon Jovi make music for people who don't really like music, particularly those over 60 who enjoy a bit of cheesy stadium rock! That said, I listened to this today while out for a run, and I think that was probably a much better way to experience it than sitting at home giving it my full attention.

Unfortunately, this really isn't a great album for me. So much of it sounds like a poor man's Bruce Springsteen, without the brilliant songwriting, storytelling or emotion that makes the Boss so good. Songs like "Wild in the Streets", "Raise Your Hands" and "Without Love" feel like second-rate Springsteen. There's plenty of energy and big choruses, but very little that I find particularly interesting.

Everything is so polished and over the top. The guitars are huge, the choruses are designed for stadiums, and there's no shortage of attitude, but it all feels a bit naff. I can understand why this sort of music was so popular in the 80s, but it's never really been my thing.

However, this album does have "Livin' on a Prayer", and what a song that is! It's an absolute classic and one of those iconic records that everyone knows. You can almost guarantee you'll hear it on a night out, and when that chorus kicks in, it's impossible not to sing along. A genuinely brilliant pop-rock song on an otherwise very average album.

Favourite track: "Livin' on a Prayer". An absolute belter and a genuinely iconic song. Easily the best thing on the album.

Least favourite track: Take your pick. So much of this felt naff, with "Wild in the Streets", "Raise Your Hands" and "Without Love" all sounding like poor Springsteen imitations.

Album artwork: Standard 80s rock album cover. Nothing particularly exciting or memorable.

You Give Love A Bad Name

Just paper thin. The sound, the music and the lyrics.

1. Hire the guy who writes for Kiss, Cher and Bonnie Tyler and get him to write songs for you.
2. Gather 30 high school kids in a pizza place and keep reworking the songs and running order to appeal to them.
3. Profit.

Get in the bin.

This is one of those "side B significantly weaker than side A" situations.

The hair metal equivalent of the Eagles

Ein perfekt polierter 80s‑Rock‑Turbo: große Hooks, Stadion‑Chöre, Null Scham und maximaler Spaß. Livin’ on a Prayer und You Give Love a Bad Name sind so überlebensgroß, dass sie das ganze Album nach oben ziehen, während der Rest solide zwischen Hard‑Rock‑Drive und Pop‑Glam pendelt. Kein Tiefgang, aber ein makelloser Adrenalinschub.

Like most produce from the Garden State, this doesn’t age well. You’ve got those classic song alongs that we all love but it’s very 80s. I’ll give it one bonus star for the Bristol Bon Jovi car.

I mean it's hard to deny it's popular for a reason. It's not deep, it's simple and catchy. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.

Sounds much the same, but a few bangers on here

it's like that B movie you hate but keep coming back to when you're 7 beers in

Yay, nostalgia time! Haha, my mom is a huge Bon Jovi fan so I was pretty much raised on this one... It's been many years since I've listened to the whole thing though.
Are a lot of the lyrics cheesy and generic? Absolutely, but the delivery is perfect to me. I was laughing at "Wanted Dead or Alive" while singing along wholeheartedly :)
I don't like every song, and I was fine with having forgotten about a couple, but still very happy to see this on the list.

For as much as this album can be simple or cheesy, I find it to a major staple of its genre. It is as anthemic and energetic as it is fun. I do prefer as an experience his follow-up 'New Jersey' but this does somehow work as a collection of bangers.

I haven't listened to this since the late 80s when it was EVERYWHERE. I went through a phase later (in the 90s) where I considered this bad music, unworthy of my time. Since then, I have acknowledged the power of some of these songs (Wanted Dead or Alice, Living on a Prayer, You Give Love a Bad Name, etc) because of their seemingly universal appeal and staying power. Still wasn't listening on purpose though.

I haven't ever heard any of this album on anything but car speakers and shitty bar speakers, and listening now on good gear, I'm impressed by the recording quality and happy to hear all of the detail I have been missing.

Another reviewer said at the beginning of his review "There are countless incurable diseases, and the only thing that hurts me so much is the unrepeatability of childhood." This stopped me in my tracks, and as I read the rest of the review, it described my feelings perfectly and made me wish I was more eloquent. Because they've already reviewed this album and moved on, they'll never know how meaningful their words were to me. Thank you, all the same.

This is good music and I'm having fun listening to it for both its merit and for the nostalgia. This is going in my library today

Oh man, so on one hand this isn't something I like, I would never choose to listen to it on my own, but on the other hand I know it's super popular 80s songs that I know a few of them and they aren't horrible, but still.

Rated 6/10

This one has some bangers, but maybe it's more nostalgia than anything else. All sounds like very same-y dad rock, and I didn't discover new songs to like.

Highlights: livin on a prayer (always fun to belt out in a crowd), you give love a bad name, wanted dead or alive
