Great 80’s post punk album, dark and moody, so right up my street. Don’t know if this is more sonically experimental, or I’m just in a better mood today but I think I prefer this over
Ocean rain and crocodiles. Think I’ll
Need to go back and re listen to the other two. Though I don’t think there needs to be 3 echo and the bunnymen albums on the list, if I had to keep one it would be this one.

Okay, so I liked this better than Crocodiles, but not enough to give it a 4/5. “The Cutter” is an awesome track, but most of the rest were simply fine. I also liked the breakdown in “Heads Will Roll.”
I think what I struggle with is that I feel like there are a lot of stylistic similarities between them and Midnight Oil, a band who I think is better and unjustly omitted from this list. It’s not that Echo & The Bunnymen don’t deserve a place on this list—but I don’t think they deserve three places, especially when so many other great bands are not present.

Such a singular voice, and several spots of interest, some real nothing songs keep this from the tip top.

Not a worthy inclusion in my opinion, very little to engage with going on. The cutter is a half decent song, but most of the rest, title track especially, sound like a bad rehash.
Too many 80s albums is reminding me how much I dislike much of the music from that decade!

Great artwork! The album is OK, still a bit nascent.

I liked it fine. Didn't love it, though. Seems like something I should like more than I did?

Like a goth U2.
Rated 4/10
Als je een typisch jaren '80 band bent en de zang laat inspireren door U2, dan krijg je dit. Probleem is wel dat dat je dan vergeleken gaat worden met U2. En tja...dat verlies je.

When I was in school, there was a kid who got called "echo" because he had buck teeth (he was a "bunny man").
Anyway, Cutter is a solid song, as are a few others on this album. It does get a little samey though.

Tykkäsin tästä yllättävän paljon! En ihan neloseen saakka mutta kuitenkin.

This might indeed be the darker side of Echo & the Bunnymen and what really stuck out to me is how this psychedelic post-punk album really is shoegaze avant la lettre.
The album is filled with oriental influences by the collaboration with Shankar (not Ravi, a different one) and quite uptempo and aggressive rhythmic material throughout the album. Songs like The Cutter, Back Of Love and Heads Will Roll are prime examples.
But besides these there are also the steps sideways, like in My White Devil and Higher Hell, where the experiments with sounds and buildup work incredible.
The more experimental Porcupine and Gods Will Be Gods might take an extra listen but when you do it's fully worth it and they turned out my favourites of this album.
