I like it fine but I sometimes think the wild reception it got on release was down to nobody thinking he had it in him anymore. But truth was this was just a first step towards the genuine masterpiece that is Rough and Rowdy Ways.

Going into this one I didn’t have the highest expectations, (especially considering this is his 30th! album) but this album is really solid.

Rated 8/10

prefer his voice earlier in his career... nevertheless great listening experience despite being skeptical. wish i was more well versed in what is a cover and not (as with most of his/others songs at the time). adele for make you feel my love >>>

Day 77

I like the part where she says "You probably want hard boiled eggs"

Fav track: Not Dark Yet

Rated 4/10

Quit whilst you’re ahead

Bob tries a Steve Earle/Dan Lanois outlaw blues sound here and it results in an okay record. Nothing I will take with me.

Rated 8/10

A good album even if it sounds like it was hard work getting there.

Rated 8/10

A step below his albums before 1976 but a damn fine return to form all the same

Rated 6/10

Not too bad.

Standout track: Make You Feel My Love

Rated 6/10

Any album created by an old man from this era is gonna be an interesting listen. I really enjoy Bob Dylan’s vocal performance, he really sounds like he has been through the ringer. A number of good songs on here. That said, I think the lyrical content here is less interesting. A lot of the album focuses on love, out with the surrealistic images he paints on his early albums. It’s well done, but makes for a much less unique and interesting listen. Some songs drag on a bit long as well, especially the final track.

Rated 6/10

Interesting folk album but not much more to say about it.

This is listenable, but I did not need to listen to this before I die. Can we all agree Dylan peaked in 1965?

4/5. Bob Dylan’s careers was one of many ups and downs. His 60’s output made him the “voice of a generation” then he basically sabotaged his own image with the over-hated 1970 album “Self Portrait” before having an aimless early 70’s. Then he was suddenly back in peak shape in the mid 70’s with “Blood on the Tracks” and “Desire.” Then he plummeted off a cliff with his weirdly horny Christian era and an awful 1980’s albums (except for Oh Mercy which is a pretty good record.) then most of the 90’s ranged from mediocre to bad.

But then came “Time out of Mind” in 1997 which saw Dylan reunite with producer Daniel Lanois, producing what was easily his best album since the 70’s, and in my opinion his final truly great album. This album always makes me feel like I should be in a dingy dive-bar, listening to a man who’s destroyed his life by chain-smoking sing the blues. It’s among his darkest lyrically, and Lanois’ production gives it a very unique feel. Whether that be the guitar hits of “Love Sick” or the organs on my personal favorite track “cold irons bound”. There is also the 16 minute long beast of a closer “Highlands” and though it isn’t quite on the level of other long Dylan cuts like “Sad eyed lady of the lowlands” it’s still a good song. Maybe not the first Dylan record I’d recommend someone, but a pretty great late-era album from him.

Rated 6/10

Entirely too long. Cut out the boring folk songs and you have a pretty good blues album.

2.5/5.0: Mixed

Rated 4/10

the last dylan album on the list. there are several good songs on here that are ruined by the production as well as the normal bob dylan singing

Rated 4/10

This is my 4th Dylan album from the list, and I believe there are 7. This is better than most of the others. However, that's a low bar. And 72 minutes long? Ugh.

"She wrote me a letter
And it was so kind
She put down in writing
What was in her mind "

GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE. POET?!? HANG IT UP, BOB

I do like the bluesy stuff on the album: guitar licks, rhythm section, and the occasional Wurlitzer piano/organ. One the whole, it's not for me.

How I feel about this album: Watching my wife drink out of a fancy tumbler with an inch and half of amber liquid, I'm stricken by just how cool that looks. Whiskey tastes like gasoline to me, not "smoky, peaty, and with hints of oak" or whatever. It's fucking gross. I REALLY want to like it; I just don't. I feel like there must be something wrong with ME because so many people do like it. I wish I understood what people like about this whiskey. And Bob Dylan.

The handful of songs I liked brought this to ⭐⭐ from ⭐. There just wasn't enough for three

If you don't pay attention to the lyrics (which I don't), then most of this album is quite repetitive.
That can be a good thing because some tracks have a really good feel to them, like "Love Sick", "Million Miles", and especially the cool "Cold Irons Bound".
On the other hand, it sometimes gets boring (my oh my, 16-minute closer "Highlands").
All in all, I enjoyed this much more than 1960s only-voice-and-guitar Dylan.
3/5 - good

90s Blues Dylan Album. Very necessary. Thanks Dimery

This might be my favorite bob dylan voice. It’s gruff but he can still hold a tune. It also might be my favorite album of his that I’ve heard so far.
