As a rock/indie fan i never properly got into the Chems until after this album and have never been motivated to go back.
This just works for me as a complete album, unencumbered by the presence of a massive hit single (or at least one i recognise).
All albums can also be improved with a sprinkle of tim burgess.
I suspect i have all the albums after this or have certainly listened to them, but as it turns out the one i have previously ignored is their finest, most distilled collection of their craft

I like a lot of later Chemical Brothers singles, so I think I was expecting to enjoy this more than I did.
I've ended up with no real strong feelings about it either way, other than the low noise in Three Little Birdies Down Beats that sounded like someone was hammering on the door and made me feel weirdly anxious.
It's the first album in a while that I ended up listening to the morning after because I had a couple of false starts, but I liked the second half better than the first.

There is a harder edge to this debut than the later albums that I’ve heard, potentially with less of an eye on being a commercial success. Not a criticism of either mode - both are great.
The first half is full of unforgiving, relentless beats. Each song digging deep into a groove and never letting go. Three Little Birdies Down Beats goes particularly hard. The Manchester influence is there, shades of Baggy in Chemical Beats. The second half flexes to something a little more airy and open. I like the female vocals on closer Alive Alone providing a beautiful contrast to the thick clicks, thrubs and snaps around them.
An impressive debut!

Leider zu repetetiv und anstrengend zu hören. Hat seine Momente, aber reicht nicht für mehr.

I prefer my dance music to lean into funk, rather than electronic. I find this lacking in soul. But I can picture the rave culture having fun with it.

All the ingredients of their later albums are here: the tight, euphoric grooves, the Britpop cameos, the final comedown track. It's not quite as polished or confident as the follow-up albums, but it makes up for it with sheer innovation and charm.

Pozadinska muzika. Bolje od prošlog albuma koji je bio pozadinska muzika. Ali još uvijek samo pozadinska muzika. Žao mi je što ne mogu dati polovičnu zvjezdicu.

When I was in college about ten years after this album came out there was a dude on campus that everyone knew as "Techno Guy" who would sit outside the student union building all day blasting loud techno from a giant boom box and doing these weird sort of robotic dances. He also wore a newsie hat and I don't know if he ever went to class because he was always there. I'm pretty sure this was one of his go to album. And like Techno Guy, this album was sort of interesting for about two minutes then just got annoying and I wanted it to go away. I will say that this album isn't nearly as bad as a lot of the electronic music that's out there. So an extra star for that I guess. 2/5

What in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater menu music was that? Can't ever think of a time I'd want to listen to it again but I still didn't hate it. Could have been a single song and I wouldn't have noticed a difference.

I much prefer their later stuff, but I still enjoyed this album generally. This one is more rave-y and repetitive I’d say, where they developed songs with more substance and structure in their later albums. I thought this would be a nailed on 4, but sadly not.

Initial thought: Hell yeah. I was a big club kid for about 15 minutes in my late teens/early 20s, and the Chemical brothers were *the* electronic band. I'm not entirely sure I've heard this album, but I played the shit out of Dig Your Own Hole. I have a feeling this is going to be fun.
Yeah, that was great. Lots of layered sounds, complex beats, and it just sounds great! I didn't stop tapping my feet the entire album. 5 stars.

OH MY GOD I DID IT I WENT BACK IN TIME TO THE 90S

It was a journey but it didnt amaze me

Yes, the Chemical Brothers. I haven't listened to the album for a long time. It's time to change that. I can still remember the songs well. However, they are currently too hot and sweaty for me in this hot weather.

This felt like a good album to chill and vibe out to. I liked it. Favorite songs were Leave Home, In Dust We Trust, and Life Is Sweet.

I loved this album, great backgound music to move your head to and work through your day.
Great electronic album.
Favourite song: Leave home and in dust we trust
Least favourite: All good tracks
Album artwork: amazing cover

It's not bad but not something I'd listen to a lot.
Many of the songs repeat the same things over and over.

This really was something when it was released, but in retrospect I have to admit their second album is a lot better and is the one I still put on my record player every now and then.
The first four songs on here have luckily really stood the test of time, but after 'Three Little Birdies Down Beats' the album drops off in the middle with uninteresting and at times - dare I say it - even boring beats, but luckily picks itself up again with Life is Sweet.
Still, it's nice to hear this again after all these years. No matter how many synthesizers, drum loops and samples are used on this album, almost everything sounds warm and organic and lively.
It's a 3,5* album
