Much preferred this when it was ambient, the cheesy 80s production does it no favours

Rated 8/10

It makes me want to turn up the collar of my trench coat and moodily smoke outside a 1980s wine bar as I stare at the reflection of the neon sign in a puddle.

Rated 6/10

Ah, yes. Immaculate 80s vibes that sound like something straight out of the Goldbergs. What's not to love? I'm being only slightly sarcastic by the way.

Rated 4/10

The syntheeist of synth pop muzak sung by the ghost of the 80s.

Rated 6/10

I get the feeling that these guys are the only 80’s band that didn’t at least try doing coke before hitting record. The songs themselves weren’t bad, but they were all monotonous and some were simply too long.

Rated 8/10

Never heard of it before but really enjoyed this one! Great vibes and songs were all a good length (they suit the slower vibe of some of the music without droning on too long). He's got a lovely voice. Almost gave it a 5. Second listen confirms it as a 4

Rated 8/10

I'd never heard Blue Nile before -- pleasantly surprised! Each song is a weird little sound collage. I will definitely listen to this again.

Rated 6/10

Reminds me of David Byrne and Prefab Sprout, never heard of them

Rated 8/10

Really liked the vibe of this

Rated 6/10

I don't think that this album could be more 80s if it tried

Rated 8/10

I remember the 80s but not this band. I started off feeling that this was a poor imitation of Japan but then at their fourth song Stay and subsequent songs everything was quite wonderful, lovely melodies and instrumentation. This feels quite cool, and that’s not a word I use a lot.

bem melhor que o de ontem

eh esquecível também, mas pelo menos eu me diverti!!

Worse than Coldplay

Tasting notes:

Hints of Roxy on the nose, with fleeting scent of Peter Gabriel (or is that Kate Bush? Hard to say!)

The first taste wants to remind you of a more modern, more romantic Beatles (possibly). However, it eludes that comparison while begging for the same. Very smooth, sweet but thin, perhaps too chilled and could use some aeration. I never prepare well for these tastings! Ah well!

On the tongue, centrally, I'm noticing unusual and fleeting flavors - The Police ("When the World is Running Down" bassline jumps out in the song "Stay" possibly the most exuberant experience here today), XTC, Talk Talk, and a Bowie-esque mouthfeel. No finish or aftertaste whatsoever.

Overall a very well made and pleasant white blend, though sadly forgettable.

Pairs well with closing a restaurant at 2:30 AM on Wednesday, or brunch at Grandma's.

Rated 10/10

I have previously heard, and very much enjoy the follow up "Hats" so I was rather excited and hopeful going into this one. I'm kicking myself for never having explored The Blue Nile to any further extent.

This is a wonderful synth-pop type album, but far quirkier and a lot more dextrous than your typical fare. The level of care taken to the atmospheric haunts throughout is nothing short of spectacular, supported by frequent bouts of eclectic instrumentation such as the xylophone, flute and unorthodox forms of percussion. The synth work is very In a Silent Way-like in some respects, also reminiscent of some 70s Berlin school electronic. The bass playing, tone and sound ooze class - they culminate in an ethereal, yet rather funky experience all told. The piano arrangements in "Easter Parade" invoke such a sombre, affecting mood, serving as a welcome break within the album akin to something that Mark Hollis would dabble with during his solo career.

Another record that ranks amongst my favourite discoveries along this process so far. A 2.86 overall site rating is fucking criminal.

Rated 8/10

I was pleasantly surprised by this

Rated 2/10

Another album I can’t believe is on the list! One minute in I new I was wasting my time!

Rated 8/10

Growing up in Scotland in the eighties, it felt like generally accepted fact that this was one of the best albums of all time. But for some reason, I never connected with it. It's been a long time since I last listened, though. And I have to say, on relistening, it's pretty damn good. I have some minor reservations about the vocals that keep it from a five for me, but it's a strong four.

Rated 8/10
